The lice are obligatory ectoparasites and the head lice agent is Pediculus humanus capitis. They harm people by sucking blood, creating allergy and dermatitis. In addition, they can infect certain disease agents. This study was carried out to investigate the incidence of P. h. capitis in some elementary school students in Başkale district of Van province. A total of 530 students, 251 of them girls and 279 boys, were included in the study. 3.8% of the students, 6.8% of the girls and 1.5% of the boys were found infested. The hair length of the students is classified as short, medium and long. 46% (244 people) of the students were long-haired and 12.3% were short-haired. However, when the prevalence of infestation in hair length groups was examined, the highest positivity was observed in students with medium hair length of 6.2%. A higher infestation was detected in wavy (7.7%) and curly hair (7%). The relationship between hair shape and parasitism was statistically significant. When the distribution of infestation in the father profession groups was examined, it was determined that the most positivity was seen in the self-employed group with 8%, followed by the farmers (6.8%) and the chauffeur (4.2%) professions respectively. It was determined that 16 students living in a family of 16 four to seven people a who make up 80% of total 20-bit infestation students live in a family. The rate of infestation determined by this study showed that head louse is an important problem in our region. Although it does not lead to severe clinical picture, it is a public health problem that causes significant social and psychological problems. As a result, personal protection measures should be taken to protect against the disease and the education of the public should be informed about the disease and parasites. It is also thought that planning a national health policy to reduce pediculosis will be of public interest.

Bunun yanında bazı hastalık etkenlerini insana bulaştırabilirler. Bu çalışma; Van İli Başkale İlçesinde Bazı İlköğretim Okulu Öğrencilerinde P. h. capitis sıklığının araştırılması amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırmaya beş okuldan 251'i kız ve 279'u erkek olmak üzere toplam 530 öğrenci dahil edilmiştir. Tüm öğrencilerin %3,8'i, kızların %6,8'i ve erkeklerin de %1,5'i P. h. capitis ile enfeste tespit edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin saç uzunluğu kısa, orta ve uzun olarak sınıflandırılmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin %46'sı (244 kişi) uzun saçlı iken, %12,3'ünün kısa saçlı olduğu görülmüştür. Fakat, enfestasyonun saç uzunluğu grupları içindeki yaygınlığına bakıldığında en yüksek pozitiflik %6,2 ile orta saç uzunluğuna sahip öğrencilerde görülmüştür. Enfestasyonun saç şekilleri içindeki yaygınlığına bakıldığında dalgalı (%7,7) ve kıvırcık saçlılarda (%7) daha yüksek bit enfestasyonu tespit edilmiştir. Saç şekli ve parazitlik arasındaki ilişki istatistiki olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur. Enfestasyonun baba meslek grupları içindeki dağılım incelendiğinde, en fazla pozitifliğin %8 ile serbest meslek grubunda görüldüğü, bunu sırasıyla çiftçi (%6,8) ve şoför (%4,2) mesleklerinin izlediği belirlenmiştir. Toplam 20 bit enfestasyonlu öğrencinin %80'nini oluşturan 16 öğrencinin `dört ila yedi kişilik` bir ailede yaşadığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışma ile tespit edilen enfestayon oranı, bölgemizde baş bitlenmesinin önemli bir sorun olduğunu göstermiştir. Bitlenme her ne kadar ağır klinik tablolara yol açmasa da, önemli sosyal ve psikolojik sıkıntılara yol açan bir halk sağlığı sorunudur. Sonuç olarak hastalıktan korunmak için kişisel korunma tedbirleri alınmalı, halkın bu konudaki eğitimine önem verilerek özellikle okul çağı çocukları ve ebeveynleri hastalık ve parazit hakkında bilgilendirilmeli ve farkındalık oluşturulmalıdır. Ayrıca pedikülozu azaltmak ulusal bir sağlık politikasının planlanması da toplum yararına olacağı düşünülmektedir.
