This study shows the effects of the changes in the terms of trade over the trade balance experienced by Turkey, which has applied outward-oriented economic policies since the 1980s (1982:01- 2015:02), Any deterioration or improvement seen in the terms of trade might positively or negatively affect the trade balance, which is an important determinant for the balance of payments. The variables used for the models of this study are net barter terms of trade, income terms of trade, gross barter terms of trade and the unit value and quantity index of import and export. Since Turkey's exports, as a developing country, is dependent on its imports, the results indicated that any change in the terms of trade affects the country's trade balance. In addition, through the calculations made by using the Nicholson Technique for the period between 1982 and 2015, it is concluded that the income effect of the terms of trade of Turkey's total export and import is, in general, positive. The deceptive results that can be reached due to the measurements used for the relation between the terms of trade and trade balance might bring forward troublesome choices that a country make over its prospective trade policy and the decisions of macro-economy and the trade policy of the country. The extent of any deterioration or improvement experienced in the terms of trade will not be equal in each and every country. Understanding the relationship between the trade balance and the terms of trade is very important in global economics, especially for those developing countries that are outward-oriented.

Bu çalışma, 1980 sonrası dönemde (1982:01-2015:02) dışa açık ekonomi politikalarını uygulayan Türkiye'nin dış ticaret hadlerinde yaşadığı değişimlerin ticaret bilançosu üzerindeki etkilerini göstermektedir. Dış ticaret hadlerinde yaşanan bir bozulma (iyileşme), ödemeler dengesinin önemli bir belirleyicisi olan ticaret bilançosunu olumsuz (olumlu) yönde etkilemektedir. Çalışmadaki modeller için kullanılan değişkenler; net değişim ticaret hadleri, gelir ticaret hadleri, gayrisafi değişim ticaret hadleri, ithalat ve ihracatın birim değer ile miktar endeksleridir. Sonuçlar, gelişmekte olan bir ülke konumundaki Türkiye'nin ihracatının ithalatına bağımlı olması nedeniyle dış ticaret hadlerindeki bir değişimin ülkenin ticaret bilançosuna etkilediğini göstermiştir. Bunun yanı sıra 1982-2015 dönemleri arası için Nicholson Yöntemi ile yapılan hesaplamalarla, Türkiye'nin toplam ihracat ve ithalatının dış ticaret hadleri gelir etkisinin olumlu olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Dış ticaret hadleri ve ticaret bilançosu arasındaki ilişki için kullanılan ölçümler neticesinde çıkabilecek yanıltıcı sonuçlar, ülkenin uygulayacağı ticaret politikasında ve makroekonomik kararlarda yanlış tercihlere sebebiyet verebilir. Ticaret hadlerinde yaşanan bir bozulmanın ya da iyileşmenin boyutu, her ülke için aynı olmayabilir. Küresel dünya ekonominde, özellikle dışa açık gelişmekte olan ülkeler için ticaret bilançosu ve dış ticaret hadleri arasındaki ilişkinin anlaşılabilmesi çok önemlidir.
