ABSTRACTThe Effect of Pre-Pregnancy Body Mass Index on Prenatal Attachment and Anxiety Level in Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pre-pregnancy body mass index on prenatal attachment and anxiety levels in pregnant women. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted with 314 voluntary pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria and applied to Nenehatun Maternity Hospital Erzurum between April 2019 and November 2019. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Prenatal Attachment Inventory (PAI) and the Trait Anxiety Inventory (TAI). Mean, percentage, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman's correlation analysis were used to assess the data. Results: A statistically significant correlation was found between body mass index (BMI) and prenatal attachment and trait anxiety levels of pregnant women. A positive and weak correlation was detected between the body mass index and trait anxiety mean scores (p<0.05) and a negative and moderate correlation between body mass index and prenatal attachment was found (p<0.001). While there was a positive and statistically significant correlation between pre-pregnancy weight and trait anxiety (p <0.005), a negative and statistically significant correlation was found between pre-pregnancy weight and prenatal attachment (p <0.001).Conclusion: Body mass index was found to affect the prenatal attachment and trait anxiety. It was detected that as BMI increased, trait anxiety increased but prenatal attachment decreased. It was found that trait anxiety was the most experienced condition in obese pregnant women and prenatal attachment was the lowest. Keywords: Anxiety, attachment, body mass index, midwife, pregnant, prenatal attachment.
