In this research it is aimed to determine the relationship between the attachment styles and defense mechanism of adults with substance use disorders and the variables in the life process. In this context, it was investigated whether there is a significant difference between attachment styles of the individuals, attachment to parents/peers and defense mechanism depending on the variables of socio-demographic features, family characteristics and substance use status.The sample of the study consisted of 6 females and 97 males totally 103 adults who were treated because of substance use disorder at Istanbul Erenköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Training and Research Hospital Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center (AMATEM). In order to collect data in the research Experiences in Close Relationships I, Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, Defense Style Questionnaire and Personal Information Form created for this study were used. It was found that men were significantly more likely to have a anxious attachment style compared to women, the rate of anxious attachment was significantly higher in married than singles. It was found that people with substance user family members had more avoidant attachment than those who had any family members do not use substance. It was found that increasing the number of individuals using substance in family increase the avoidant attachment in individuals. The mature defense mechanism was found to be higher in individuals whose family members do not use substance, the immature defense mechanism was found to be higher in individuals with family members use substance. In addition, mature defense mechanism decreased and immature defense mechanisms increased as the number of individuals using family members increased. In this study a significant negative correlation was found between the age of first substance use and immature defense mechanism. In the light of this results immature defense mechanisms are used more frequently as the age of first substance use decreases.

Bu araştırmada, madde kullanım bozukluğu olan erişkinlerin bağlanma stilleri ve savunma mekanizmaları ile yaşam sürecindeki değişkenlerin ilişkisini belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda, sosyo-demografik, aile özellikleri ve madde kullanım özellikleri değişkenlerine göre bireylerin bağlanma stilleri, ebeveyne/arkadaşlara bağlanma ve savunma mekanizmaları arasında anlamlı farklılık olup olmadığı incelenmiştir.Araştırmanın örneklemini, madde kullanım bozukluğu nedeniyle İstanbul Erenköy Ruh ve Sinir Hastalıkları Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Alkol Madde Tedavi Merkezinde (AMATEM) tedavi alan 6 kadın, 97 erkek toplam 103 erişkin oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada veri toplamak amacıyla Yakın İlişkilerde Yaşantılar Envanteri I, Ebeveyne ve Arkadaşlara Bağlanma Envanteri, Savunma Biçimleri Testi ve bu çalışma için oluşturulan Kişisel Bilgi Formu kullanılmıştır. Erkeklerde kadınlara kıyasla kaygılı bağlanma stilinin anlamlı bir şekilde daha yüksek olduğu; evli olanlarda bekarlara kıyasla kaygılı bağlanmanın anlamlı bir şekilde daha yüksek olduğu saptanmıştır. Ailesinde madde kullanan bireyin olduğu kişilerde ailesinde madde kullanan bireyin olmadığı kişilere göre kaçıngan bağlamanın daha yüksek olduğu; ailede madde kullanan birey sayısı arttıkça kişilerde kaçıngan bağlanmanın arttığı saptanmıştır. Ailesinde madde kullanan bireyin olmadığı kişilerde olgun savunma mekanizmasının daha yüksek olduğu; ailesinde madde kullanan bireyin olduğu kişilerde ise immatür savunma mekanizmasının daha yüksek olduğu saptanmıştır. Ayrıca ailede madde kullanan birey sayısı arttıkça olgun savunma mekanizmalarının azaldığı ve immatür savunma mekanizmalarının arttığı saptanmıştır. Araştırmada ilk madde kullanım yaşı ile immatür savunma mekanizması arasında negatif yönde anlamlı bir ilişki saptanmıştır. Buna göre ilk madde kullanım yaşı düştükçe immatür savunma mekanizmaları daha çok kullanılmaktadır.
