Shaped by the ideas of Douglass C. North, the co-winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Economics with Robert W. Fogel, and the great mind and pioneer of the new institutional economics approach that was found as a result of the distinctive differentiation of institutional economics within itself, this thesis study focuses quintessentially on the relationship between institutional economics and social capital. With reference to this relationship, which is shaped by North, and which we come across as `institutional trust`, this study examines theoretically in detail the relationship between the institutional economics approach, which focuses initially on rules and institutions, and the social capital approach, which is today becoming more and more important. In a theoretical framework, after this relationship is proven, the effects of trust in the formal and informal financial institutions on social capital are revealed via Structural Equation Modeling, which is a second-generation data analysis technique. According to the findings of the present research, tested using the Structural Equation Model, trust in formal and informal financial institutions has a positive and significant effect on social capital.

1993 Nobel Ekonomi Ödülü'nü Robert W. Fogel ile birlikte kazanan, büyük düşünür ve kurumsal iktisadın kendi içerisinde belirginleşen farklılaşması sonucu ortaya çıkan yeni kurumsal iktisat yaklaşımının öncüsü olan Douglass C. North'un fikirleriyle şekillenen bu tez çalışması, en öz haliyle, kurumsal iktisat ve sosyal sermaye ilişkisine odaklanmaktadır. North ile şekillenen ve `kurumlara güven` olarak karşımıza çıkan bu ilişkiden hareketle, bu çalışmada, ilk olarak merkezine kuralları ve kurumları alan kurumsal iktisat yaklaşımı ve günümüzde giderek daha da önem arz eden sosyal sermaye yaklaşımı arasındaki ilişki teorik olarak detaylı bir şekilde ele alınmaktadır. Teorik çerçevede bu ilişkinin ortaya konulmasının ardından, alanımız doğrultusunda belirlenen mali formel ve enformel kurumlara duyulan güvenin sosyal sermaye üzerine olan etkisi ikinci nesil veri analiz tekniği olan Yapısal Eşitlik Modeli aracılığıyla ortaya konulmaktadır. Yapısal Eşitlik Modeli ile test edilen araştırmanın bulgularına göre, mali formel ve mali enformel kurumlara duyulan güven sosyal sermaye üzerinde pozitif ve anlamlı bir etkiye sahiptir.
