In this thesis, physical and chemical properties of heat treated Cedrus libani A. wood were investigated. Heat treatment was carried out at four different temperatures (120, 150, 180 and 210 ° C) and three different time period (2, 5 and 8 hours). Chemical properties of the samples were detected with FTIR spectroscopy using KBr pellets. Heat treatment generally results in chemical changes in the cell wall, hemicellulose degradation and the modification of long chain molecules, in addition chemical changes including the esterification of hydroxyl groups and reduction of hemicellulose and the number of accessible OH groups within wood. Hydroxyl groups (H1429/897) changed in heat treated samples and crystalinity increased with temperature(1,21, 1,33, 1,25, 1,14 for 8hr treatment period, respectively). Cellulose ratio (A1370/670) varied with heat treatment in control sample was ( 3,30, 4,66, 2,39, 4,03) where as treated samples varied with time and temperature ( 3,13, 3,60, 3,33, 1,29). Carbonyl peaks at 1740nm increased with time and heating periods. The most apparent changes takes place at 180 and 210 C for 8 hours treatment. Surface energy of the samples were detected with Young equations. Nonpolar content of the surface energy of these samples reduced and they become more hydrophobic.
