OBJECTIVE : There is a growing researchinterest in pediatric palliative care in Lebanon. To datethe existing studies have focused on the perspective ofparents of children with cancer. The purpose of thisstudy was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL), symptomprevalence and management, functional ability,and the quality of care among children with cancer atthe Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon.METHODS : A cross-sectional survey design wasused. A convenience sample of 85 patients on therapyaged 7 to 18 years participated in the study between2010 and 2011. Using face to face interviews, a combina-tion of four instruments were administered inArabic.RESULTS : The mean age of the participants was12.5 years, with the majority having leukemia. Overall,the children had satisfactory health-related QoL,with the exception of the nausea and worry subscales,had no limitations in functional abilities, and weresatisfied with the care that they received.In children between 7 to 12 years, the most commonsymptoms were lack of appetite, pain, and nausea,while adolescents between 13 to 18 years experiencedlack of energy, irritability, and pain. Pain and nauseawere the most frequently treated symptoms.CONCLUSION : Although the participants reportedsatisfactory QoL, yet symptom management was inadequateand mainly focused on treating the physicalsymptoms. It is recommended to provide both pharmacologicaland psychological interventions in orderto alleviate symptom burden and hence improve QoLin children with cancer.
OBJECTIF: Au Liban, la recherche en soinspalliatifs pédiatriques est dans une période de croissanceet de développement. Les études existantes ont mis l'accentsur la perspective des parents ayant des enfantsatteints de cancer. Le but de cette étude était d'évaluer laqualité de vie, la prévalence et la gestion des symptômes,la capacité fonctionnelle et la qualité des soins chezles enfants atteints de cancer au « Children’s CancerCenter of Lebanon ».MÉTHODE : Une étude transversale a été utilisée.Un échantillon de convenance, 85 patients en traitementâgés de 7-18 ans ont participé à l’enquête entre 2010 et2011. Les patients interviewés ont répondu face à face àun questionnaire en quatre parties en arabe.RÉSULTATS : L’âge moyen des participants, en majoritéleucémiques, était 12,5 ans. En général, les enfantsétaient satisfaits de leur qualité de vie liée à la santé àl’exception des sous-échelles sur la nausée et les soucis,n’étaient pas limités dans leurs capacités fonctionnelles,et étaient satisfaits des soins qu’ils recevaient. Chez lesenfants de 7 à 12 ans, les symptômes les plus fréquentsétaient : manque d’appétit, douleurs, nausées, tandisque les adolescents de 13 à 18 ans souffraient de manqued’énergie, irritabilité et douleur. La douleur et les nauséesétaient les symptômes les plus souvent traités.CONCLUSION : Bien que les participants fussent satisfaitsde leur qualité de vie, le traitement des symptômesétait insuffisant et principalement axé sur le traitementdes symptômes physiques. On recommande à la fois desinterventions pharmacologiques et psychologiques pouralléger les symptômes et améliorer ainsi la qualité de viedes enfants atteints de cancer.
