Objective : To test the effect ofcupping therapy in treating chronicheadache and chronic back pain.Background: Cupping therapy “Alheijamah” is a very common nonconventionaltherapy in the Arabicsocieties that has been used inthe treatment of a wide range ofconditions, such as hypertension,rheumatic conditions, ranging fromarthritis, sciatica and back pain,migraine, anxiety, and generalphysical and mental well-being.Methods: This study was a clinicalintervention (pre and post design)utilizing non- conventional therapy(AL Heijamah) for treatment ofpatients with chronic back painor chronic headache, with threemonths follow up at the Out patientsD epartment (OPD) of HamadGeneral Hospital (HGH) HamadMedical Corporation (HMC), State ofQatar, from May 2007 to December2007, to show the efficacy of thatprocedure on chronic pain usingVisual Analog pain scale, pre andpost intervention.Results: The total number of theparticipants was eighty six, slightlymore than half of them were male(51.2%). The majority were nonQatari (72.1%); thirty seven of themhad headache and forty nine ofthem had back pain. Most of theparticipants were treated with wetcup therapy (98.8%) and only one ofthem was treated with dry cup. Fiftytwo of the participants had only onesession of cupping while only five ofthem completed the four sessions.The pain score for patients withheadache was decreased from eightto four after cupping therapy followedby intermittent periods of fluctuationof pain, scored from four to five foraround five weeks, then it maintainedconstant at four score till the end ofthe follow up period. Meanwhile thepain scale for patients with low backpain decreased from seven to threeafter two weeks and stayed constanttill the end of the twelve weeks.Conclusion: The effect of cuppingtherapy (Al heijamah) for chronicheadache and back pain has beenstudied and the results revealedsignificant improvements inparticipants as a result of cuppingtherapy. Further studies with largersamples, for longer duration of followup and use of a comparison groupare recommended.
