The problematique of this thesis is to analyse the class capacity of journalists in the axis of proletarianization processes through their conditions and experiences in the field of production and reproduction. Journalists form a unique social segment due to the social responsibilities they undertake, due to the fact that they are seen as a privileged group because of their closeness to economic, political and cultural elites and their distinctive positions within the debates on professional occupations. Journalists are approached through their salaries, life styles and those qualities mentioned above, rather than their relations of production and class practices and perceived as a specimen of `middle class`. Conversely, this thesis claims that the professionalization process of journalists is the first extensive stage of the proletarianization of journalists. Likewise, it is emphasized that the current re-proleterianization process has historically altered the `middle class` positions (and the relevant debates). In this thesis, the conditions created by this process and the forms in which journalists experience these conditions is examined through the social patterns in the fields of production and reproduction, where the demarcation lines are more and more blurred. In this context, it is argued that journalists form a unique part of the working class, through data collected from the field and it is debated how this position shapes the class capacity of journalists.

Bu tezin sorunsalı, proleterleşme süreçleri ekseninde gazetecilerin sınıf kapasitelerini üretim ve yeniden üretim alanlarındaki koşullarına ve deneyimlerine bakarak analiz etmektir. Gazeteciler, gerek kendilerine yüklenen toplumsal sorumluluklar, gerek ekonomik, siyasal ve kültürel elitlere yakınlıkları nedeniyle ayrıcalıklı bir grup olarak kavranmaları, gerekse de profesyonel meslek tartışmaları içindeki ayrıksı konumları dolayısıyla özgün bir toplumsal kesimi oluşturmaktadır. Üretim ilişkileri ve sınıfsal pratiklerinden ziyade kazançları, yaşam tarzları ve yukarıda sayılan özellikleriyle ele alınan gazeteciler, `orta sınıf`ın birer örneği olarak görülmektedir. Buna karşın tezde, gazeteciliğin meslekleşme sürecinin, gazetecilerin proleterleşmesinin ilk kapsamlı aşaması olduğu iddia edilmektedir. Benzer şekilde günümüzde yaşanan yeniden proleterleşme sürecinin de `orta sınıf` konumlarını (ve buna ilişkin tartışmaları) tarihsel olarak dönüştürdüğü vurgulanmaktadır. Tezde, bu sürecin yarattığı koşullar ile bunun gazetecilerce deneyimlenme biçimleri, aralarındaki çizgilerin giderek bulanıklaştığı üretim ve yeniden üretim alanlarındaki toplumsal örüntüler üzerinden incelenmektedir. Bu kapsamda gazetecilerin işçi sınıfının özgün bir parçasını oluşturduğu, alandan verilerle savunulmakta ve bu durumun gazetecilerin sınıf kapasitelerini nasıl şekillendirdiği tartışılmaktadır.
