Abstract

Fingerprint recognition systems are successfully being used for identifying the criminals, access control, user's entrance to computer, taking attendance and similar applications.There are studies in literature which prove the existence of the relationship between fingerprint and gender. Also in this study, the relationship between the fingerprint and gender are examined on the basis of fingerprint properties on the specific region.In this thesis, although there is no information about a person's gender information, investigating only the fingerprint information, gender of a person can be achieved, the average fingerprint ridge density of our country have been calculated for the first time and using these information, artificial neural network based an automatic gender recognition system from the person?s fingerprint have been successfully developed for the first time. Success of the developed system is achieved based on ten-fold cross-validation approach, the system's average performance is determined as %78.It is expected that the results obtained in this thesis will help to do different studies from fingerprint in future.

Parmak izi tanıma sistemleri suçlu tanımada, erişim denetiminde, kullanıcının bilgisayara girişinde, yoklamada ve benzeri uygulamalarda başarıyla kullanılmaktadır.Literatürde parmak izi ile cinsiyet arasındaki ilişkinin varlığına dair çalışmalar yer almakta olup, bu çalışmalarda parmak izi ile cinsiyet arasındaki ilişkiler belirli kesitteki parmak izi özellikleri baz alınarak incelenmiştir.Yapılan bu tez çalışmasında, cinsiyet bilgileri hakkında hiçbir bilgisi bulunmayan bir kişinin, sadece parmak izi bilgilerine bakılarak cinsiyetinin sınıflandırması yapılmış, ülkemiz için ortalama parmak izi tepe yoğunlukları ilk kez hesaplanmış ve bu bilgiler kullanılarak yapay sinir ağları tabanlı kişinin parmak izinden cinsiyetini tanıyan otomatik bir sistem ilk kez geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen sistemin başarısını belirlemek için on-kat çapraz doğrulama yaklaşımı kullanılarak sistemin ortalama başarımı %78 olarak belirlenmiştir.Bu tez kapsamında elde edilen sonuçların, gelecekte parmak izinden farklı çalışmaların yapılmasına ışık tutağı değerlendirilmektedir.
