Illness experience and patient-relatives relationships of adult cancer patients is the subject of this study. Illness is conceptualized as experience when health and illness cases are treated with functionalist and symbolic interactionalist approaches in sociology. One of the basic sociological perspectives that make this conceptualisation is symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interactionism treats the illness experience as a social phenomenon that is built up as a result of interaction between people and allows to reach the illness and the roles and behaviors that form around it as a symbol.The aim of the study is understanding how the cancer is experienced by the patients and how the patient-close relatives relationship is shaped in the disease process. This research was designed as a qualitative study of the study depending on the purpose and the exception situation was used. In this study, where the phenomenology method was used and the `illness experience` as a phenomenon was discussed in detail, interviews were also conducted with the patients' relatives.As a result of the study, it has been seen that every patient experiences cancer differently. The most important sociological factors that reveal these differences are gender, age and occupation. Cancer experience has not caused similar changes or effects in all of the patients' self depending on these events. Every cancer patient has not experienced processes that affect the self in a negative way, such as stigmatization, identity dilemma, and biographical disruption. However, depending on the treatment of the disease, all patients have experienced medicalization. It is the result that the cancer experience affects the patient-relatives relationship. Patient relatives were found to have more close relationships with patients than the normal period. It has been observed that the patient-close relationship has a role to fulfill as a duty to support the patient both in the context of the kinship, and that the cancer perception has negative connotations.In the first part of the study that is consisting of four parts, the title of conceptual and theoretical framework was given. In the second part, information about methodology was given. The third part provides analysis and evaluation of data obtained from interviews. In the fourth and last section, conclusion and discussion has been included.

Bu çalışmada yetişkin kanser hastalarının hastalık deneyimleri ve hasta-yakın ilişkisi konu edilmiştir. Sağlık ve hastalık olguları sosyolojide işlevselcilik ve sembolik etkileşimci yaklaşımlarla ele alınırken hastalıklar yaşanmış bir deneyim olarak kavramsallaştırılır. Bu çalışma, temel sosyolojik perspektiflerden biri olan sembolik etkileşimcilik kuramına dayalı olarak yürütülmüştür. Sembolik etkileşimcilik hastalık deneyimini insanlar arası karşılıklı etkileşim sonucunda inşa edilen sosyal bir olgu olarak inceler ve bir sembol olarak hastalık ve onun etrafında şekillenen rol ve davranışlara ulaşmaya imkân verir.Çalışmanın amacı, kanserin hastalar tarafından nasıl deneyimlendiği ve hastalık sürecinde hasta ve yakını arasındaki ilişkinin nasıl şekillendiğini anlamaktır. Bu amaca bağlı olarak çalışma nitel bir araştırma olarak tasarlanmış ve özel durum deseni kullanılmıştır. Fenomenoloji yönteminin kullanıldığı ve `hastalık deneyimi` olgusunun çok yönlü ele alındığı bu çalışmada hasta ve hasta yakınlarıyla görüşmeler yapılmıştır.Çalışma sonucunda hastaların kanseri farklı deneyimledikleri görülmüştür. Bu farklılıkları ortaya çıkaran en önemli sosyolojik özellikler cinsiyet, yaş ve meslektir. Kanser deneyimi bu özelliklere bağlı olarak hastaların tümünün benliklerinde benzer değişime veya etkiye neden olmamıştır. Damgalanma, kimlik ikilemi ve yaşam bütünlüğünün bozulması gibi benliği olumsuz yönde etkileyen süreçler her kanser hastası tarafından deneyimlenmemiştir. Ancak hastalığın tedavisine bağlı olarak bütün hastaların tıbbileştirmeyi deneyimledikleri anlaşılmıştır.Kanser deneyiminin hasta-yakın ilişkisini etkilediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Hasta yakınlarının hastalarla normal dönemden farklı olarak daha yakın ilişkiler kurdukları görülmüştür. Hasta-yakın ilişkisinin seyrini, hasta yakınlarının hem akrabalık olgusu bağlamında hastaya destek olmayı bir görev olarak yerine getirmeleri hem de kanser algısının olumsuz çağrışımlara sahip olmasının belirlediği görülmüştür.Dört bölümden oluşan çalışmanın ilk bölümünde kavramsal ve kuramsal çerçeve başlığına yer verilmiştir. İkinci bölümde tezin yöntemi hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Üçüncü bölümü uygulamadan elde edilen bulgular oluşturmaktadır. Dördüncü ve son bölümde ise çalışma hakkındaki sonuç ve tartışma yer almaktadır.
