Primary Education is the first step of raising readers who will create new ideas and catch up the responsibilities of technology era. Therefore, primary education has a significant importance to improve the reading ability and the habit of students. Teachers must be exemplary characters for the students through their period of studies, in the same time, they have to be in the position of guiding their students as well. In a manner of speaking, first, the teachers must gain the habit of reading while improving those skills through attending some events related to reading. Additionally, they must develop a positive attitude on the reading. In the basic training process; primarily it is waited from the teachers to develop positive attitude on the reading, to be intertwined with the activities that can develop themselves on the reading area and to gain reading habits. The teacher who has developed a positive attitude on reading will also be a role model for his/her students. Due to that reasons, it is expected from a teacher to have a consciousness and sensitivity to his/her own language, being equipped with education culture, and exhibiting behavior of qualified reader. This study aims to define the reading habits and attitudes of teachers. In this study, both qualitative and quantitative data are used together. The quantitative data is collected with `Reading Attitude Scale` and the qualitative data is with `Focus Group Discussion`. In the 2017-2018 Education-Academic year; the study group consists of 258 primary school teacher who is working in the primary schools of Keçiören, Ankara. For supporting the quantitative data of the study, Focus Group Discussion was made with 10 teachers with the convenience and voluntariness criteria. IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0, statistical analysis software was used for the analysis of quantitative data. Analysis of the qualitative method was made by the descriptive analysis method. As the result of study, it was obtained that teachers who are aged 51 and above, teachers who has professional seniority aged 21 and above, and the graduates of Education Institutes are the groups that are reading more than the other groups. It is determined that the materials which are preferred the most by the school teachers are newspaper, art book and the materials which are preferred at least are humour magazines. As the professional seniority and the age of the primary school teacher increases, the number of books that they have read is also increasing. Reading attitude assessment shows, when the score of primary school teachers in reading attitude increases, the book read by them in a month also increases. It was also obtained that the primary school teachers do not prefer to read in the noisy places.

Teknoloji çağının sorumluluklarını yerine getirebilecek, yeni bilgiler üretecek okuyucular yetiştirmenin ilk basamağını oluşturan temel eğitim düzeyinin, öğrencilerin okuma becerilerinin gelişip okuma alışkanlıklarının kazanımının şekillenmesindeki yeri ve önemi büyüktür. Toplumun gidişatına yön verecek olan yeni neslin yetiştirilmesi görevini üstlenen öğretmenler, öğrencilerin okumaya karşı tutumları ve okuma alışkanlıkları üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahiptir. Öğretmenler, eğitim öğretim sürecinde örnek kişi olacakları gibi, yetiştirdikleri öğrencilere aynı zamanda rehber olma konumundadır. Temel eğitim süreci içerisinde öğretmenlerden öncelikli olarak okumaya karşı olumlu yönde tutum geliştirmesi, okuma alışkanlığını kazanması ve kendisini okuma alanında geliştirecek etkinliklerle iç içe olması beklenmektedir. Okumaya karşı olumlu tutum geliştirmiş ve okuma alışkanlığı kazanmış öğretmen, öğrencilerine olumlu bir rol model olacaktır. Bundan dolayı, sınıf öğretmeninin ana diline yönelik bilinç ve hassasiyeti kazanmış, okuma kültürüyle donanmış, nitelikli bir okur kimliğiyle örnek alınacak kişilik sergilemesi beklenmektedir. Bu araştırma, sınıf öğretmenlerinin okumaya karşı tutumlarını ve okuma alışkanlıklarını belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmada nicel ve nitel verilerin bir arada kullanıldığı karma desenli bir çalışma yürütülmüştür. Nicel veriler `Okuma Tutum Ölçeği` ile, nitel veriler ise `Odak Grup Görüşmesi` ile toplanmıştır. Çalışma grubunu 2017-2018 eğitim-öğretim yılında Ankara ili Keçiören ilçesindeki devlet okullarında görev yapan 258 sınıf öğretmeni oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın nicel verilerini desteklemek amacıyla, çalışma grubundan gönüllülük, ulaşılabilirlik kriterlerine göre seçilen 10 öğretmen ile nitel veri elde edilmesi amacıyla odak grup görüşmesi yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın nicel verilerini analiz etmek amacıyla IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0 istatistik programı, nitel verilerini analiz etmek amacıyla ise betimsel analiz yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda erkek sınıf öğretmenlerinin kadın sınıf öğretmenlere göre okuma tutum puan ortalamaları biraz daha yüksek bulunmuştur. 51 ve üstü yaş aralığındaki öğretmenlerin okuma tutum puanları, diğer gruptaki öğretmenlere göre biraz daha yüksektir. Sınıf öğretmenlerinin okumayı en fazla tercih ettiği materyaller gazete, sanat kitapları iken; en az tercih ettiği materyalin ise mizah dergisi olduğu saptanmıştır. Gazeteyi erkek öğretmenler, 51 ve üstü yaş aralığındaki öğretmenler, 21 ve üstü mesleki kıdeme sahip öğretmenler, Eğitim Enstitüsü mezunu öğretmenler diğer gruptaki öğretmenlere göre daha fazla okumaktadır. Sınıf öğretmenlerinin yaşı ve mesleki kıdemi arttıkça, ayda okudukları kitap sayısı da artmaktadır. Sınıf öğretmenlerinin okuma tutum puanları arttıkça, sahip oldukları ve ayda okudukları kitap sayısının da arttığı belirlenmiştir. Sınıf öğretmenlerinin genel olarak gürültülü ortamlarda kitap okumayı tercih etmedikleri sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
