Additive manufacturing (AM) has been successfully applied in various applications and allows easy, cost effective and rapid manufacture of complex shaped 3D models as compared to conventional methods. Among the AM technologies, the most popular and inexpensive method is Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM). There is a growing interest in direct manufacturing of end-use parts with this technology. However mechanical properties of the FDM printed parts are the main constraint preventing the widespred application of FDM printed parts. FDM technology needs to make improvements in existing materials to meet the mechanical requirements of the load bearing components. This thesis investigated the production of carbon fiber reinforced 3D printed Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) polymer composite parts with possible improvement in mechanical properties. The obtained results are promising such that the part strength is shown to be significantly improved with 6 mm long carbon fibre reinforcement. However the fact that the flexibility and processability of the fibres is diminishing with increasing reinforcement content is also noted. It has also been determined that the print pattern significantly affects the mechanical properties.

Eklemeli İmalat (Eİ) teknolojileri bir çok farklı alanda başarılı bir şekilde uygulanmıştır ve geleneksel yöntemlere kıyasla kompleks formdaki 3B parçaların daha kolay, düşük maliyetli ve hızlı üretimini sağlamıştır. Eİ teknolojileri arasında en popüler ve ucuz yöntem Eriyik Biriktirme Yöntemidir (Fused Deposition Modeling - FDM). Bu teknoloji ile son kullanıma hazır parçaların doğrudan imalatına ilgi giderek artmaktadır. Ancak düşük mekanik özellikleri, FDM baskılı parçaların yaygın uygulamasını önleyen temel bir problemdir. Dolayısıyla bu teknoloji için, mevcut malzemelerde yük taşıyan bileşenlere ait mekanik gereksinimleri karşılayacak düzeyde bir iyileştirilme yapılması gerekmektedir. Bu tezde, karbon elyaf takviyesiyle 3B baskılı Akrilonitril Bütadien Stiren (ABS) polimer kompozit parçaların üretimi ve mekanik özelliklerindeki muhtemel iyileştirme araştırılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar ümit verici olup, 6 mm uzunluğunda karbon elyaf takviyesi ile parça mukavemetinin önemli ölçüde iyileştirilebileceği gösterilmiştir. Ancak esneklik ve işlenebilirliğin artan takviye içeriği ile azaldığı bulguları da not edilmiştir. Ayrıca yazdırma deseninin mekanik özellikleri önemli derecede etkilediği saptanmıştır.
