ABSTRACTAim: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a disorder that affects the respiratory system and upper airway during sleep (apnea, hypopnea). Continuous apnea/hypopnea in OUAS results with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular morbidity and is emerged as an independent risk factor for mortality. In this syndrome, as a cause of cardiovascular risk, increased oxidative stress and reduced antioxidant defense of the body is involved. In this study, we aimed to determine the levels of selenium (Se) and manganese (Mn) elements with related antioxidants of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes in OSAS patients and these levels were compared with control groups.Materials and Methods: Our study consists of 38 OSAS patients and 27 control individuals. Serum samples were taken after polysomnographic examination. Serum Se (IV) and Mn (II) concentration from patients and healthy control were measured by GFAAS. Antioxidant enzyme activities of GPx and SOD were determined using enzyme-mediated immuno–sorbent (ELISA) detection. Results are given as mean ± SD and data were compared using student-t test, p<0.05 were regarded as significant. Results: Serum Se(IV) and Mn(II) levels in patients with OSAS were significantly lower than control individuals (p<0.0001). GPx activity in OSAS patients were lower than controls (p<0.01). Serum SOD activity in OSAS group were lower than control subjects but there was no significance (p>0.05).Conclusions: Our results suggested that OSAS patients have lower Se(IV) and Mn(II) levels and decreased GPx and SOD activities compared to healthy controls. It is clear that in OSAS patients the antioxidant capacity is reduced following by increased oxidative stress. In conclusion, supporting of Se(IV) and Mn(II) can increase the activities of antioxidant enzymes in OSAS patients. Key Words: GFAAS, Se (II), Mn (II), GSH Px, SOD.

ÖZETAmaç: Obstrüktif uyku apne sendromu (OUAS) solunum sistemini ilgilendiren ve uyku sırasında üst hava yollarını etkileyen (apne, hipopne) bir sendromdur. OUAS hastalarda sürekli apne/hipopne kardiyovasküler ve serebrovasküler morbiditeye neden olmakta, mortalite için bağımsız bir risk faktörü oluşturmaktadır. OUAS'da kardiyovasküler riskin bir nedeni olarak, artmış oksidatif stres ve azalmış antioksidan savunma da ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmada OUAS hastalarında selenyum (Se) ve mangan (Mn) elementleri ile ilgili antioksidan enzimlerden glutatyon peroksidaz ve süperoksit dismutaz enzimlerinin düzeylerinin belirlenmesi ve kontrol grubu ile karşılaştırılması hedeflenmiştir.Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmaya 38 OUAS hastası ile 27 sağlıklı kontrol dahil edildi. Polisomnografik ölçümün ardından serum örnekleri elde edildi. Hasta ve sağlıklı kontrollerde serum Se(IV) ve Mn(II) konsantrasyonları GFAAS ile ölçüldü. Antioksidan enzimlerden GPx ve SOD enzim aktiviteleri enzim aracılı immuno-sorbent (ELISA) yöntemi ile tayin edildi. Bulgular Ort ± SD olarak ifade edilerek, student-t testi ile istatistik uygulandı, p<0.05 anlamlı kabul edildi. Bulgular: OUAS olan hastaların serum Se(IV) ve Mn(II) düzeyleri kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı olarak düşük bulundu (p0.0001). Enzim aktivitelerinden GPx aktivitesi hasta grubunda kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı olarak düşük (p<0,01), SOD aktivitesi hasta grubunda kontrol grubuna göre düşük bulundu ancak anlamlı değildi (p>0.05). Sonuçlar: Bulgularımız, OUAS'lı hastaların Se(IV) ve Mn(II) düzeylerinin yanı sıra, GPx ve SOD aktivitelerinin de kontrol grubuna göre azaldığını gösterdi. OUAS hastalarında artmış oksidatif strese karşı antioksidan kapasitenin azaldığı tesbit edilmiştir. OUAS hastalarına Se ve Mn takviyesi bir destek olarak düşünülebilir.
