Science and Technology has become an inseparable part of our lives. In modern times during which the importance of science education increases day by day, an accurate and clear acquisition, namely construction of scientific concepts is significant. Learners actively construct their new knowledge with their own individual ways by using their previous knowledge and experience. The Constructivist Approach aims students combine their previous knowledge with the new ones and learn concepts meaningfully.Concepts are the building stones of knowledge, and they allow people to organize and classify what they have learnt. Misconceptions are people?s ideas which are known as unscientific. A mental model consists of pictures which we construct in our minds to help us remember how something works. These models, created by the students, may not always be technically correct, but they are functional. Therefore, teachers should evaluate these models while teaching. Also they should research students to produce different mental models in their minds.When the literature studies are analyzed, it is observed that misconceptions on the ?Cell Division and Heredity? subject are mentioned quite often. However, there are not enough studies which aim to remove the misconceptions on these subjects. In this research, students? misconceptions on the ?Cell Division and Heredity? subjects in the Science and Technology curriculum have been determined by means of a literature scan. The teaching method in this study is consistent with the activities (conceptual change texts, concept maps, mind maps, concept cartoons, analogies, models) based on the constructivist approach and it aims to remove the common misconceptions depicted by the literature scan. The effects of this type of teaching on students? concept learning, their formation of mental models, permanence of their concepts and their attitudes towards the course were analyzed. The main problem of the research can be expressed as follow:What are the students? misconceptions on the ?Cell Division and Heredity? subjects? How can these be removed and what are the effects of activities based on the Constructivist Approach on students? learning the concepts and their attitude towards the course?The research was based on quasi-experimental design with pre-test post-test control group. The participants are 55 eighth grade students (27 from the experimental group, 28 from the control group) from a primary school in İzmir. The experimental group was taught by using the conceptual change strategies (concept maps, mind maps, conceptual change texts, concept cartoons, analogies and models) based on constructivist approach whereas the control group was taught activities on Science and Technology Curriculum. Before beginning the experimental practice, students of both the experiment and control groups were given the Attitude Scale towards Science and Technology together with an open-ended conceptual understanding test as pre-test. After the experimental practice, students were given the same scale and test as a post-test. Also after the treatment, 9 students from each group were done semi-structured interviews to determine students? conceptual constructions and mental models. A test of permanence was administered after the post test, consisting of open-ended questions similar to the previous conceptual understanding test administered in the beginning and end of the program. Half of the questions in this permanence test were the same with the conceptual understanding test whereas the other half consisted of different but similar questions which aimed to measure the same learning outcomes. The data which obtained by using conceptual understanding test, Science and Technology attitude scale and by interviewing the students at the end of the treatment is analyzed by using statistical methods. Science and Technology lessons which are applied on activities of conceptual change strategies based on constructivist approach have positive effects on students? concept learning, mental models permanence of their concepts and attitudes towards the course. In the light of the obtained findings and results, suggestions were made to teachers and researchers.

Fen ve teknoloji günümüzde insan yaşamının ayrılmaz bir parçası olmuştur. Fen öğretiminin öneminin gittikçe arttığı bir dönemde, fen kavramlarının doğru ve anlaşılır bir şekilde öğrenilmesi yani yapılandırılması önemlidir. Öğrenenler, var olan bilgilerini ve deneyimlerini kullanarak yeni bilgileri bireysel yollarla aktif olarak yapılandırırlar. Yapılandırmacı yaklaşım, öğrencilerin yeni karşılaştıkları bilgilerle önceden sahip oldukları bilgilerinin birleştirilmesini ve kavramların anlamlı öğrenilmesini amaçlamaktadır.Kavramlar bilginin yapı taşlarıdır ve insanların öğrendiklerini sınıflandırmalarını ve organize etmelerini sağlar. Kavram yanılgıları, kişilerin sahip oldukları bilimsel olarak doğru kabul edilmeyen fikir ve anlayışlarıdır. Bir zihinsel model, bir şeyin nasıl işlediğini hatırlamamıza yardım etmesi için kafamızda oluşturduğumuz resimlerdir. Öğrencilerin oluşturdukları zihinsel modeller, zaman zaman teknik olarak tam doğru olmayabilir, ancak bunlar işlevseldir. Bu nedenle öğretmenler öğretimleri sırasında bu zihinsel modelleri de değerlendirmeli, öğrencilerin zihinlerinde farklı zihinsel modeller üretip üretmediklerini araştırmalıdırlar.İlgili alan yazın çalışmaları incelendiğinde, ?Hücre Bölünmesi ve Kalıtım? konularında mevcut kavram yanılgılarından sıkça söz edilmekle birlikte, bu kavram yanılgılarının nasıl giderileceğine ilişkin çalışmalar sınırlı sayıdadır. Bu çalışmada, ?Hücre Bölünmesi ve Kalıtım? ünitesi konularındaki kavram yanılgıları, alan yazın taraması yapılarak belirlenmiştir. Bu kavram yanılgıları ışığında hazırlanmış yapılandırmacı yaklaşıma uygun etkinliklerle (kavramsal değişim metinleri, kavram haritaları, zihin haritaları, kavram karikatürleri, analojiler, modeller) öğretim gerçekleştirilmiş ve bu öğretimin öğrencilerin kavramları öğrenmeleri, zihinsel modelleri, öğrendiklerinin kalıcılığı ve derse yönelik tutumları üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın temel problemi şu şekilde ifade edilebilir:Öğrencilerin ?Hücre Bölünmesi ve Kalıtım? konularındaki kavram yanılgıları nelerdir, bunlar nasıl giderilebilir ve yapılandırmacı yaklaşıma dayalı etkinliklerin öğrencilerin kavramları öğrenmeleri ve derse yönelik tutumları üzerindeki etkisi nedir?Araştırmada, ön test-son test kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Deneysel uygulamaya İzmir ilinde öğrenim görmekte olan 55 (27 öğrenci deney grubu, 28 öğrenci kontrol grubu) sekizinci sınıf öğrencisi katılmıştır. Kontrol grubundaki öğrencilerle Fen ve Teknoloji Öğretim Programındaki etkinliklerle öğretim gerçekleştirilmiş, deney grubundaki öğrencilerle ise ?Hücre Bölünmesi ve Kalıtım? konularıyla ilgili kavram yanılgılarını gidermeye yönelik yapılandırmacı yaklaşıma dayalı etkinlikler (kavram haritaları, zihin haritaları, kavramsal değişim metinleri, kavram karikatürleri, analojiler ve modeller) hazırlanarak öğretim gerçekleştirilmiştir. Deneysel uygulamaya başlamadan önce deney ve kontrol gruplarındaki öğrencilere Fen ve Teknolojiye Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği ve açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan kavramsal anlama testi ön test olarak, deneysel uygulama sonrasında ise son test olarak uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca, deney ve kontrol gruplarındaki öğrencilerin kavramları nasıl yapılandırdıklarını ve oluşturdukları zihinsel modelleri belirlemeye yönelik deney ve kontrol gruplarından 9'şar öğrenci ile yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Ön test ve son test olarak uygulanmış olan kavramsal anlama testindeki açık uçlu sorulara benzer sorular (yarısı kavramsal anlama testindeki sorularla aynı, diğer yarısı aynı kazanımları ölçmeye yönelik benzer sorular), son testlerin uygulanmasından 6 hafta sonra, kalıcılık testi olarak uygulanmıştır. Uygulamalar sonunda kavramsal anlama testi, Fen ve Teknolojiye yönelik tutum ölçeği ve öğrenci görüşmelerinden elde edilen veriler istatistiksel yöntemlerle analiz edilmiştir. Yapılandırmacı yaklaşım temelli kavramsal değişim stratejilerine dayalı etkinliklerle gerçekleştirilen Fen ve Teknoloji derslerinin, öğrencilerin kavramları öğrenmeleri, zihinsel modelleri, bilgilerinin kalıcılığı ve derse yönelik tutumları üzerinde olumlu etkileri olduğu görülmüştür. Elde edilen bulgu ve sonuçlar ışığında, öğretmenlere ve araştırmacılara önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
