ABSTRACTAim: This study aims to investigate the relationship between childhood obesity and executive functions, such as selective attention, impulsivity, response inhibition, interference control, perseveration, mental flexibility, conceptualization, set-shifting, working memory and abstraction.Materials and Metods: Total 30 cases, who ages ranging from 11 to 18 years old, that diagnosed for being obesity to the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology in Dokuz Eylul University were involved in this study. 30 cases with a normal weight, admitted to the Department of Pediatrics with nonspecific symptoms, formed the control group. Height and weight percentiles of the patients were evaluated according to appropriate schedules for age and gender. BMI of the patients were calculated. Those with BMI 10-85p were considered as normal weight and those with 95 percentile and above were considered as obese. Those with known medical problem such as endocrinological, neurological and genetic disease, drug users whose drugs could affect the body weight or executive functions were excluded. The clinical diagnoses were evaluated with the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) and according to these evaluations psychiatric disorders also excluded. Data were collected by using a sociodemographic data form and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). To evaluate performance based executive functions, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST ) and Stroop Test TBAG Form were applied to the all participants.Results: Obesity was related to the household income (p=0,001), educational level of the father (p=0,015), the type of occupation of the mother (p=0,032), obesity in family members (p=0,001) and psychiatric disorders in family (p=0,020). The obese participants reported more peer relation problems on Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (p=0,030), and there were not any difference between parents reports. The obese participants displayed lower performance on Stroop Test TBAG Form, part 4 (p=0,043) and part 5 (p=0,018). We could not detect any statistical differences in WCST scores between two groups.Conclusion: Although obese parcipitans show lower performance in Stroop test, there were not any differences in WCST between two groups. İts possible that there are some dysfunctional components of executive functions, but also it was not common disruption. More studies need to focus on childhood obesity and executive functions.Key words: obesity, executive functions, child and adolescents.

ÖZETAmaç: Bu çalışmada obezitesi olan çocuk ve gençleri normal kiloda olan akranları ile odaklanmış dikkat, tepki ketlemesi, bozucu etkiye direnç (interferans kontrol), bilgi işleme hızı, karmaşık yönetici dikkat, özellik belirleme, perseverasyon (tekrarlama), çalışma belleği, kavramsallaştırma, soyut düşünme, kurulumu değiştirme gibi yürütücü işlevler açısından karşılaştırılması amaçlanmıştır.Yöntem: Çalışmaya Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Polikliniği'ne başvuran, tıbbi hastalığın eşlik etmediği, obezitesi olan 11-18 yaşlar arası 30 çocuk ile; yaş ve cinsiyet yönünden eşleştirilmiş normal kiloda olan 30 çocuk çalışmaya alındı. Katılımcıların boy ve ağırlık persantilleri yaş ve cinsiyete uygun çizelgelerle belirlendi. VKİ'leri hesaplandı. VKİ 10-85p olanlar normal kilolu, 95 persentil ve üstü olanlar obez olarak kabul edildi. Genel psikiyatrik değerlendirme için Çocuklar İçin Duygulanım Bozuklukları ve Şizofreni Görüşme Çizelgesi-Şimdi ve Yaşam Boyu Versiyonu-Türkçe Versiyonu (K-SADS) uygulandı. Herhangi bir psikiyatrik bozukluğu olduğu saptanan çocuklar çalışma dışı bırakıldı. Çalışmaya alınan çocukların sosyodemografik özellikleri kaydedildi. Çocuklara ve ebeveynlerine kendilerinin dolduracağı Güçler ve Güçlükler Anketi (GGA) verildi ve yürütücü işlevleri değerlendirmek amacıyla Wisconsin Kart Eşleme Testi (WKET) ile Stroop Testi TBAG Formu uygulandı.Bulgular: Obezitesi olan grupta, bu çocukların babalarının eğitim seviyesi ile ortalama aile gelirlerinin daha düşük olduğu (sırasıyla p=0,015; p˂0,001), annelerinde işsizlik oranının daha yüksek olduğu (p=0,032), çekirdek aile üyelerinde obezitenin daha yüksek oranda bulunduğu (p˂0,001) ve ruhsal bir hastalığı olanların sayısının daha fazla olduğu (p=0,020) saptandı. Diğer sosyodemografik özellikler açısından gruplar arasında anlamlı bir fark saptanmadı. Obezitesi olan çocuklar GGA'ya göre daha fazla akran sorunları yaşadıklarını bildirirken (p=0,030), ebeveyn formlarında herhangi bir fark saptanmadı. Obezitesi olan çocuklar Stroop testinde Bölüm 4 ve Bölüm 5'i daha uzun sürede tamamladı (sırasıyla; p=0,043; p=0,018). İki grup arasında Stroop testin diğer bölümlerinin tamamlama süreleri ve WKET puanlarında herhangi bir fark saptanmadı.Sonuç: Obezitesi olan çocukların Stroop testinde daha düşük performans göstermelerine karşın WKET'de gruplar arasında bir fark saptanmamıştır. Obezitesi olan çocuklarda yürütücü işlevlerin bir bölümünde bozulma olmasına karşın yaygın bir bozulmanın olmadığı, ancak bu konuda daha fazla çalışma yapılması gerektiği düşünülmüştür.Anahtar Kelimeler: obezite, yürütücü işlevler, çocuk ve ergen.
