Dereli district, which is located in the eastern part of the Blacksea Region, is 32 km from Giresun province. The area of the district center is about 25 km2. The district is neighboring the central district on the north side, Yağlıdere and Keşap on the east side, Bulancak on the west side, and Şebinkarahisar on the south side. Established in the Aksu Brook Valley and bearing the characteristics of a town, this settlement is historically an old one. The subject of this research study is to examine the physical, humane, and economic geography of the district center. When the geomorphological characteristics of the research area are examined, it is observed that the land is under the impact of elevation and slope, which are the peculiar characteristics of the Blacksea Region. The research area is surrounded by high mountains. The district was established on a narrow and uneven area, which was formed on the land eroded by the brooks, basically on the sides of the Aksu Brook's bed. Since Dereli district, where the Blacksea climatic characteristics are dominant, is distant from the shore and behind the Giresun Mountains, the marine effects are not felt in the district. The mean annual temperature is around 7.7 Cº and mean annual precipitation is 693 mm. Dereli district is rich in terms of vegetation; it is possible to see some species of the broad-leaved trees and coniferous trees such as Oriental Beech, Oriental Spruce, Mountain Alder, Alder, Scotch Pine, and Linden. The soil types widespread in the district are Red-Yellow Podzolic, Alluvion, Gray-Brown Podzolic, and Brown Forest Soil. According to 2017 ABPRS (address-based population registration system) population census results, the population of Dereli district is 8921, and its population density is 356.6 people / km2. There are 5 administrative quarters in Dereli district, which gained the status of a district in 1958. In economic terms, the agriculture and stock raising activities are dominant. It is not developed in terms of modern industry, but there are production sites in the forms of ateliers and there is a facility producing powder cement and ready-mixed concrete that can be accepted as half-modern. In terms of transportation, although it is located on a territorial enclave, it has an advantage, since the road to Şebinkarahisar passes through this district. There are promising sites such as historical bridges, monastery, castle, and caves in the research area, which has a high tourism potential.

Karadeniz Bölgesi'nin Doğu Karadeniz Bölümü içerisinde yer alan Dereli ilçesi, idari yönetim olarak bağlı olduğu Giresun iline 32 km uzaklıktadır. İlçe merkezi yaklaşık 25 km2 yüz ölçüme sahiptir. İlçe kuzeyden merkez ilçe, doğudan Yağlıdere ve Keşap, batıdan Bulancak, güneyden ise Şebinkarahisar ilçesi ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Aksu Çayı Vadisi içerisinde kurulmuş olan ve kasaba fonksiyonu özelliği taşıyan bu yerleşme tarihi açıdan eski bir yerleşmedir. Bu araştırmanın konusunu ilçe merkezinin fiziki, beşeri ve ekonomik coğrafya özelliklerinin incelenmesi oluşturur. Araştırma sahasının jeomorfolojik özelliklerine bakıldığında tipik bir Karadeniz Bölgesi'nin tanıtıcı özelliği olan yükselti ve eğimin araziyi etkisi altına aldığı görülmektedir. Araştırma sahası yüksek dağlarla çevrili ve bu arazinin birçok akarsu tarafından aşındırılmasıyla temelde Aksu Deresi'nin yatağının iki yamacında dar ve engebeli bir alanda kurulmuştur. Karadeniz iklim özelliklerinin hâkim olduğu Dereli ilçesi, kıyıdan uzak olması ve Giresun Dağları'nın ardında kalması denizellik etkisinin iç kısımlara sokulmasını kısıtlamıştır. Yıllık ortalama sıcak değeri 7.7 Cº civarıyken, yıllık ortalama yağış miktarı 693 mm'dir. Dereli ilçesi bitki örtüsü açısından zengin olup, geniş yapraklı ve iğne yapraklı ağaç türleri içerisinde yaygın olarak Doğu Kayını, Doğu Ladini, Kızılağaç, Akçaağaç, Sarıçam, Kestane ve Ihlamur gibi bazı bitki türlerini görmek mümkündür. İlçe genelinde hâkim toprak türleri ise Kırmızı-Sarı Podzolik, Alüvyon, Gri-Kahverengi Podzolik ve Kahverengi Orman Toprakları'dır. 2017 yılı ADNKS sayım sonuçlarına göre Dereli ilçesinin nüfusu 8921 kişi olup nüfus yoğunluğu ise km2' ye 356.6 kişi olarak gerçekleşmiştir. 1 Nisan 1958 yılında ilçe statüsü kazanan Dereli ilçesine idari yönetim olarak 5 mahalle bağlıdır. Ekonomik bakımdan tarım ve hayvancılık faaliyetleri ön plandadır. Modern sanayinin gerisinde olup, daha çok atölye tipi imalat alanları ve yarı modern denilebilecek toz çimento, hazır beton işletimi yapan tesis bulunmaktadır. Ulaşım bakımından iç kesimde yer almasına rağmen Şebinkarahisar yolunun buradan geçmesi avantaj sağlamıştır. Turizm potansiyeli yüksek olan araştırma sahasında tarihi köprüler, manastır, kale ve mağaralar umut vericidir.
