Pure titanium has been widely used in many engineering fields because of its superior properties such as excellent corrosion resistance, high strength/weight ratio, and biocompatibility. However, pure titanium has poor wear resistance. Thus, it does not available in the desired rate. In this reason, many surface treatments have been applied to improve the poor tribological properties of pure titanium.In this study, electroless Ni-B coating, plasma nitriding, and duplex surface treatments, which are the combination treatments of electroless Ni-B coating and plasma nitriding, were applied the surfaces of the pure titanium. Heat treatment during one-hour at 400°C was applied the specimens after the surface treatments. Experiments about electroless Ni-B coating were carried out during one-hour at 95°C in electroless Ni-B bath and experiment studies about plasma nitriding were conducted at the processing temperature of 500°C, 600°C, 700°C in the 4-hours processing time. Structural properties of the different surface treated materials were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Micro-hardness measurements were made for the determination of mechanical properties and the pin-disc wear tests were made to determine of tribological properties. Furthermore, potantiostat/galvanostat device was used to investigate the electro-chemical properties. It was observed that poor wear resistance of pure titanium was improved by means of all surface treatments. In the wear and corrosion resistances in the surface treatments, the best results were obtained for the plasma nitrided specimens. In addition, the best properties in the duplex surface treated specimens were obtained from heat treated specimens, which were coated electroless Ni-B and plasma nitrided at 700°C, subsequently.Keywords: Pure titanium, electroless Ni-B, plasma nitriding, duplex, wear, corrosion, heat treatment, SEM, XRD.

Saf titanyum; sahip olduğu mükemmel korozyon direnci, yüksek dayanım/ağırlık oranı ve biyouyumluluk gibi üstün özelliklerinden dolayı pek çok alanda yaygın bir şekilde kullanılmaktadır. Ancak zayıf aşınma direnci nedeniyle kullanım alanları kısıtlanmakta ve arzu edildiği oranda kullanılamamaktadır. Saf titanyumun kötü olan tribolojik özelliklerini iyileştirmek için çok sayıda yüzey işlemi uygulandığı bilinmektedir.Bu çalışmada, saf titanyum numunelere akımsız Ni-B kaplama, plazma nitrürleme ve bu iki işlemin birleşimi olan dubleks yüzey işlemleri uygulanmıştır. Yüzey işlemlerinden sonra numunelere 400°C'de 1 saat süreyle ısıl işlem uygulanmıştır. Akımsız Ni-B kaplama deneyleri 95°C sıcaklıktaki banyoda ve 1 saat boyunca, plazma nitrürleme deneyleri ise 500°C, 600°C, 700°C işlem sıcaklığında ve 4 saatlik işlem süresinde yapılmıştır. Farklı yüzey işlemi uygulanmış malzemelerin yapısal özellikleri taramalı elektron mikroskop (SEM) ve X ışını kırınım ölçer (XRD) cihazları ile incelenmiştir. Mekanik özelliklerin belirlenmesi için mikro-sertlik ölçümleri ve tribolojik özelliklerin tespit edilmesi için de pim-disk aşınma deneyleri yapılmıştır. Ayrıca potansiyostat/galvaniyostat cihazı kullanılarak elektrokimyasal özellikler belirlenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, bütün yüzey işlemlerinin saf titanyumun zayıf aşınma direncini iyileştirdiği tespit edilmiştir. Yüzey işlemleri içerisinde hem korozyon hem de aşınma direnci açısından en iyi sonuçlar plazma ile nitrürlenmiş numunelerde elde edilmiştir. Dubleks yüzey işlemi uygulanmış numuneler içinde en iyi özellikleri, akımsız Ni-B kaplandıktan sonra 700°C'de nitrürlenmiş ve akabinde ısıl işlem uygulanmış saf titanyum numuneler sergilemiştir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Saf titanyum, akımsız Ni-B kaplama, plazma nitrürleme,dubleks, aşınma, korozyon, ısıl işlem, SEM, XRD.
