Biogas, which contains mainly methane and carbon dioxide gases, is produced during fermentation process of biomass under the anaerobic condition as a result of various bacterial groups? activities. While organic wastes are treated energy can also be produced via biogas production. In recent years, biogas and biogas technology has become widespread in parallel with the increased interest of renewable energy and environmental protection criteria.This thesis has been done as a result of collaborative studies with Gebze Institute of Technology and work packages of the `The Production of Biogas from Agricultural and Animal Wastes and Utilization of Obtained Gases in Integrated Energy Conversion Technologies (BIOGAS)` Project which is supported by TUBITAK?s TARAL Projects. The aim of the thesis is to create simulations of the biogas production process from agricultural and animal wastes by using ADM1 and ASPEN HYSYS models and determining the optimum operating conditions by using results obtained in these simulations. In this thesis, the optimum values of operating parameters such as the amount of biogas, biogas content and hydraulic retention time have been identified with usage of important process variables like the flow rate and dry matter content of raw materials. According to completed simulations and optimizations, optimum dry matter content in the fermenter was %12.4 and hydraulic retention time was 20 days have been concluded for a raw material composition containing 1:1 ratio of animal and agricultural wastes. When the process had been operated under these conditions, 1080 m3 biogas, including 70% methane content, could be produced.

Biyogaz, biyokütlenin havasız ortamda çeşitli bakteri gruplarının ortak faaliyetleri sonucunda çürütülmesi esnasında ortaya çıkan ve ağırlıklı olarak metan ve karbondioksit içeren bir gazdır. Biyogaz ile organik atıkların bertarafı sağlanırken beraberinde enerji de üretilebilmektedir. Son yıllarda gerek çevresel koruyucu kriterlerin gerekse yenilenebilir enerjiye olan ilginin artmasıyla birlikte biyogaz ve biyogaz teknolojisi giderek yaygınlaşmaktadır.Bu tez, KOCAELİ ilinde TÜRKİYE'nin ticari boyutta ilk biyogaz tesisi olarak kurulması planlanan ve TUBİTAK'ın TARAL projeleri kapsamında ?Bitkisel ve Hayvansal Atıklardan Biyogaz Üretimi ve Entegre Enerji Sistemlerinde Kullanımı (BİYOGAZ)? adlı projenin iş paketleri ile birlikte Gebze Yüksek Teknoloji Enstitüsü'nde yapılan ortak çalışmalar sonucunda oluşmuştur. Tezin amacı; hayvansal ve bitkisel atıklardan biyogaz üretim prosesinin ADM1 ve ASPEN HYSYS modellemesi kullanılarak simülasyonlarının oluşturulması ve bu simülasyonlarda elde edilen sonuçlar kullanılarak optimum işletme koşullarının belirlenmesidir. Tez çalışmasında, besleme debisi ve hammaddelerin kuru madde oranı gibi önemli proses değişkenleri kullanılarak biyogaz miktarı, biyogaz içeriği, bekletme süresi gibi işletme parametrelerinin optimum değerleri tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan simülasyon ve optimizasyon çalışmaları sonucunda 1:1 oranında bitkisel ve hayvansal atık içeren bir hammadde kompozisyonu için fermantör içi optimum hammadde kuru madde oranının % 12.4 ve bekletme süresinin 20 gün olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Bu şartlarda proses işletildiğinde günlük % 70 metan içerikli 1080 m3 biyogaz elde edilebileceği tespit edilmiştir.
