Abstract

Cancer is a disease that leads to death if it is not treated as a result of uncontrolled proliferation of cells. Breast cancer is the most common maling tumor among women in the world and is predominant in cancer deaths due to its ability to metastasize. Side effects seen as a result of cancer treatment reduce the percentage of this disease in the treatment rate. Therefore, studies in the field of health have shifted to new treatment methods. As a result of the studies conducted, natural products have become important targets for developing new anticancer agents.There are many plants belonging to the Origanum species. These plant species have economic importance in many sectors due to volatile and aromatic oils, secondary metabolites. These plant species are commonly used in treating cough, in pain in the stomach and in the treatment of infectious diseases. In this study, the antioxidant and antiprpliferative properties of the endemic species Origanum sipyleum L. (purple coral) extract in breast cancer cell lines were investigated. Thus, it is aimed to develop an effective therapeutic agent for cancer treatment.

Kanser, hücrelerin kontrolsüz olarak sürekli çoğalmaları sonucu gelişen tedavi edilmediği takdirde insanı ölüme götüren bir hastalıktır. Meme kanseri dünyada kadınlar arasında en sık görülen maling tümör olup, metastaz yapmaya yatkın özelliği ile kanser ölümlerinde başlıca sıralardadır. Kanser tedavisi sonucu görülen yan etkiler bu hastalığın tedavi oranındaki yüzdesini düşürmektedir. Bu nedenle sağlık alanındaki çalışmalar kanser de yeni tedavi methodlarına kaymıştır. Yapılan çalışmalar sonucunda doğal ürünlerin yeni antikanser ajanlar geliştirmek için önemli hedef hale gelmiştir.Origanum türüne ait çok sayıda bitki bulunmaktadır. Bu bitki türleri uçucu ve aromatik yağlar, sekonder metabolitler nedeniyle birçok sektörde ekonomik öneme sahiptir. Bu bitki türleri genel olarak öksürüğü tedavi etmede, midede gerçekleşen ağrılarda ve bulaşıcı hastalıkların tedavisinde, yaygın olarak kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışmada endemik tür olan Origanum sipyleum L. (mor mercan) ekstraktının meme kanser hücre hatlarında antioksidan ve antiprpliferatif özellikleri incelenmiştir. Böylece kanser tedavisi için etkili bir terapötik ajan geliştirilmesi hedeflenmektedir.
