The need for changing location has appeared with human existence and is one of the human needs which is required to maintain life. The need for changing location is met with the services provided for people by highway, airway, seaway and railway businesses within transportation sector. Although first capital costs of railway businesses are higher than of other transportation businesses, railway businesses carry out activities as businesses which provide services in a fixed pricein the long term and also are reliable, energy efficient and environment-friendly. These activities cause service production costs in railway businesses. Within the scope of this approach, this study focuses on activities of State Railway Business, whose activities include passenger and freight transportation, and also on costs resulting as a consequence of these activities. This study also aims at calculating costs of railways which provide passenger transportation services on Mersin-Adana main lines of State Railway Business on the activity level. In calculating costs of passenger transportation, Activity-Based Costing Method (ABC), which is one of the modern costing methods, has been used in order to achieve the abovementioned objective. Furthermore, passenger transportation costs have been calculated by taking traditional costing method into account and it has been compared with the data obtained from unit costs of services provided for passengers. As a result of the comparison, it has been determined that unit costs of services which have been calculated with traditional costing method of business, are higher than the unit costs of services calculated with activity-based costing method. İnsanların var olması ile ortaya çıkan ve yaşamlarını devam ettirebilmeleri için gerekli olan ihtiyaçlarından birisi de yer değiştirme ihtiyacıdır. Yer değiştirme ihtiyacı, ulaştırma sektörü içerisinde yer alan karayolu, havayolu, denizyolu ve demiryolu işletmelerinin insanlara sundukları hizmetlerle karşılanmaktadır. Demiryolu işletmeleri, diğer ulaştırma işletmelerine göre ilk yatırım maliyetlerinin yüksek olmasına rağmen uzun dönemde sabit fiyat garantisi bulunan, güvenilir, enerji tasarrufu sağlayan ve çevreye daha duyarlı bir şekilde hizmet sunumunu gerçekleştiren işletmeler olarak faaliyetlerini yerine getirmektedir. Bu faaliyetler, demiryolu işletmelerinde hizmet üretim maliyetlerinin oluşmasına neden olmaktadır.Bu kapsamda çalışmada faaliyet konusu yolcu ve yük ulaştırması olan Devlet Demiryolları İşletmesi'nin faaliyetleri ve bu faaliyetler sonucunda meydana gelen maliyetler konu edinilmiştir. Çalışma konusu doğrultusunda, Devlet Demiryolları İşletmesi'nin Mersin - Adana hattı arasında faaliyet göstererek yolcu ulaştırma hizmeti sunan trenlere ait maliyetlerin faaliyetler düzeyinde hesaplanması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amacı gerçekleştirebilmek için yolcu ulaştırma maliyetlerinin hesaplanmasında çağdaş maliyetleme yöntemlerinden biri olan Faaliyet Tabanlı Maliyetleme (FTM) yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca, yolcu trenleri hizmet maliyetleri, geleneksel maliyetleme yöntemi dikkate alınarak da hesaplanmış ve yolculara sunulan hizmet birim maliyetlerinden elde edilen veriler karşılaştırılmıştır. Karşılaştırma sonucunda, işletmenin geleneksel maliyetleme yöntemine göre hesaplanan hizmetlerin birim maliyetlerinin, faaliyet tabanlı maliyetleme yöntemine göre hesaplanan hizmetlerin birim maliyetlerinden daha fazla olduğu tespit edilmiştir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Ulaştırma Sektörü, Devlet Demiryolları, Ulaştırma Maliyetleri, Geleneksel Maliyetleme Yöntemi, Faaliyet Tabanlı Maliyetleme Yöntemi.
