EFFECTS OF SEED SOAKING AND STRATIFICATION TREATMENTS ON GERMINATION AND SEEDLING DEVELOPMENT IN CHESTNUTOne or two years old rootstocks are used in grafting or budding of chestnut. To reduce propagation costs, seedling growing period should be shortened or cheaper treatments should be developed. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of seed soaking on seed germination and seedling development in chestnut. The study was carried out in the fields and laboratories and greenhouses of the Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty, Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute and Samsun Forestry Nursery. Three chestnut cultivars (Erfelek, Marigoule, Salıpazarı) were used in the study. In order to enhance the germination of chestnut seeds, seed soaking (0, 3, 5, 7, 9 days) and stratification treatments were tested. Soaked seeds were planted immediately to the plastic boxes and were placed into the growth chamber which was set to +18°C temperature. One month later, seeds were remowed from growth chamber and germination ratio of them were determined. Then, all healthy seeds were planted to the pots in the open field. In the stratification treatment, seeds were placed into moistured perlite at 4°C for 2.5 months. Then they were also planted to the pots in the open field. After vegetation period, plant emergence ratio and seedling growth were determined. As a result of the study, it has been found that seed soaking do not increase germination rate in chestnut, and morewer it reduce the germination ratio of seeds. The germination ratio was 25% when there was no soaking in water (0 days = direct planting), and it changed between 8.3-11.7% according to the soaking times. When all applications were taken into consideration, the highest emergence ratio was obtained from stratification application with 84.5% and the lowest ratio was obtained from 9 days soaking application with 19.4%. In the study, germination and emergence ratios varied also according to cultivars and cultivar x application interactions. Emergence ratios were 95.0% in Salıpazarı, 86.7% in Marigoule and 71.7% in Erfelek cultivars with the stratification application, the best method in the study. Also, some differences were also found among the cultivars in terms of seedling growth. Better seedling growth was obtained from stratification application in Erfelek cultivar, while there were no differences between the applications in Marigoule and Salıpazarı cultivars. When the results of the research were examined together, the most successful results were obtained from the stratification application and it was determined that seed soaking is not a suitable method for germinating of chestnut seeds.

SUDA BEKLETME UYGULAMASININ KESTANEDE TOHUM ÇİMLENMESİ VE ÇÖĞÜR GELİŞİMİ ÜZERİNE ETKİLERİKestanenin aşı ile çoğaltılmasında bir ya da iki yıllık anaçlar kullanılır. Çoğaltma maliyetini azaltmak için, fidan yetiştirme süresi kısaltılmalı ve daha ucuz yöntemler geliştirilmelidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı suda bekletme uygulamasının kestanede tohum çimlenmesi ve çöğür gelişimi üzerine etkilerini belirlemektir. Çalışma Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi Bahçe Bitkileri Bölümü, Karadeniz Tarımsal Araştırma Enstitüsü ve Samsun Orman Fidanlığı sera laboratuvar ve uygulama alanlarında yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada üç kestane çeşidi (Erfelek, Marigoule, Salıpazarı) kullanılmıştır. Kestane tohumlarının çimlenmesini teşvik etmek amacıyla suda bekletme (0, 3, 5, 7, 9 gün) ve katlama işlemleri denenmiştir. Suda bekletme işlemine tabi tutulan tohumlar plastik kasalara dikilerek sıcaklığı +18 °C'ye ayarlı iklim kabinine alınmışlardır. Tohumlar bir ay sonra iklim kabininden çıkarılmış ve çimlenme oranları tespit edilmiştir. Daha sonra, bütün sağlıklı tohumlar açık alanda saksılara dikilmiştir. Katlama uygulamasında, tohumlar 4 °C'de 2.5 ay süreyle nemli perlit içerisinde bekletilmişler ve daha sonra açık alanda saksılara dikilmişlerdir. Vejetasyon süresi sonunda tüm uygulamalarda çıkış oranı ve çöğür gelişimleri tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda suda bekletme uygulamalarının kestanede çimlenme oranını artırmadığı, tam tersi azalttığı saptanmıştır. Çimlenme oranı suda bekletme yapılmadığında (0 gün=doğrudan dikim) % 25 iken, suda bekletme sürelerine göre % 8.3-11.7 arasında değişmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, tüm uygulamalar dikkate alındığında en yüksek çıkış oranı % 84.5 ile katlama uygulamasından, en düşük çıkış oranı ise %19.4 ile 9 gün suda bekletme uygulamasından elde edilmiştir. Çalışmada çimlenme ve çıkış oranları çeşitlere ve çeşit x uygulama interaksiyonlarına göre önemli derecede değişiklik göstermiştir. En başarılı uygulama olan katlamada çıkış oranı Salıpazarı çeşidinde % 95.0, Marigoule çeşidinde % 86.7 ve Erfelek çeşidinde % 71.7 olmuştur. Çalışma sonucunda çöğür gelişimi bakımından da çeşitler arasında farklılıklar saptanmıştır. Erfelek çeşidinde en iyi çöğür gelişimi katlama uygulamasından elde edilirken, Marigoule ve Salıpazarı çeşitlerinde uygulamalar arasında farklılık saptanmamıştır. Araştırma sonuçları birlikte incelendiğinde en başarılı sonuçlar katlama uygulamasından elde edilmiş, suda bekletme uygulamasının kestane tohumlarının çimlendirilmesi amacıyla uygun bir yöntem olmadığı tespit edilmiştir.
