In this thesis, mainly, a rate adaptation method based on rateless codes is proposed to improve the spectral efficiency for indoor Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems in which channel conditions vary significantly. The data transmission rates and spectral efficiency that can be achieved with the proposed rate adaptation method are obtained for narrow and broadband VLC channels and are compared on the same platform with Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) methods which are widely used in RF systems. Results show that the proposed method remarkably improves the spectral efficiency compared to the conventional AMC method. In addition to the aforementioned works, studies have been performed to increase the usability of rateless codes, which form the basis of the proposed rate adaptation method, in real time applications. In a part of these studies, approximation methods have been proposed which can significantly reduce the computational complexity of rateless decoding algorithms. Obtained results demonstrate that the complexity of rateless decoding algorithm can be significantly reduced with a small performance degradation. In the last part of these studies, two new early termination methods are proposed for rateless decoder. Obtained results show that the proposed early termination methods have quite low computational complexity and can detect earlier that the code is decoded compared to the present methods.

Bu tez çalışmasında temel olarak, kanal şartlarının oldukça değişken olduğu kapalı mekan görünür ışık haberleşme (visible light communications, VLC) sistemleri için spektral verimliliği artırmak amacıyla oransız kodlara dayalı bir hız uyarlama yöntemi önerilmiştir. Önerilen hız uyarlama yöntemi ile ulaşılabilecek veri iletim hızları ve spektral verimlilik, dar ve geniş bantlı VLC kanalları için elde edilmiş ve RF sistemlerde yaygın olarak kullanılan uyarlanır modülasyon ve kodlama (adaptive modulation and coding, AMC) yöntemiyle eşit platformda karşılaştırılmıştır. Sonuçlar, önerilen yöntemin geleneksel AMC yöntemine göre spektral verimliliği önemli ölçüde artırdığını göstermiştir.Bahsi geçen çalışmalara ek olarak, önerilen hız uyarlama yönteminin temelini oluşturan oransız kodların gerçek zamanlı uygulamalardaki kullanılabilirliğini artırmak amacıyla çalışmalar yapılmıştır.~Bu çalışmaların bir bölümünde, oransız kod çözme algoritmasının hesaplama karmaşıklığını önemli ölçüde azaltabilen yaklaşıklık yöntemleri önerilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar, oransız kod çözme algoritmasının karmaşıklığının, küçük bir performans kaybı ile önemli ölçüde azaltılabildiğini göstermiştir. Çalışmaların son bölümünde ise, oransız kod çözücü için iki yeni erken durdurma yöntemi önerilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar, önerilen erken durdurma yöntemlerinin mevcut yöntemlere göre oldukça az hesaplama karmaşıklığına sahip olduklarını ve kodun çözüldüğünü daha erken algılayabildiklerini göstermiştir.
