تكمن أهمية دراسة التراث الإسلامي في كونه " الرصيد والمخزون المتميز" الذي يميزه الثبات والإستمرارية معاً، ويجمع في أعطافه القيمة الروحية والجمالية ، بالإضافة إلى كونه حقيقة مادية ملموسة فرضت قبولها واحترامها لكونها توثيقاً صادقاً لثقافة المجتمع ووحدة منهاجه وملامحة الشخصية والفكرية عبر العصور . ويعد التراث الإسلامي في العمارة والتصميم الداخلي تسجيلاً صادقاً لثقافة المجتمع، فهو نتاج الموروث المادي والتشكيلات الجمالية التي استمرت وأثبتت أصالتها وقيمتها في مواجهة التغير المستمر والثورات الفنية المتعاقبة بل وأجبرت العالم على احترامها. لذا فإن مفهوم التراث الإسلامي في العمارة والتصميم الداخلي يحتوي على شقين أساسيين : الشق الفكري : ويتمثل في المفاهيم والأفكار والمعتقدات والقيم الثقافية . الشق المادي: الذي يتجلى في الأعمال والأشياء التي صارت للوارثين . مما يخلص بنا إلى ترجمة حياة المجتمع الإنساني فهو نتاج للخبرات والمهارات والإبداعات التي أفرزها المجتمع عبر تاريخه. لقد ثأثر الفن الإسلامي بفنون الحضارات التي احتواها الإسلام تأثراً خلاقاً، حيث العبقرية والتجديد مما يدفع بحلقات تطور الفن حتى تصل إلى غايتها وإلى التبلور المتكامل للتشكيل . وإذا كان الفن الإسلامي قد تأثر منذ نشأته بفنون البلاد التي فتحها وخاصة الساساني والبيزنطي منها، إلا أنه استبعد منها الجوانب الأسطورية وفنون المحاكاة الشكلية النوعية أو الخاصة وتكويناتها الموروثة والمنقولة والمبتكرة، ثم عالج فنونها التجريدية بما يتفق مع تعاليم الدين الإسلامي وروحه وفلسفته ؛ وبهذا تميز الفن الإسلامي بقسماته عن الفنون التي تأثر بها وعن باقي الفنون الدينية. وقد وجد الفن الإسلامي طريقاً سهلاً إلى امتصاص الفنون المختلفة التي تأثر بها وصهرها في بوتقته الشخصية ؛ لأن كافة هذه الفنون تنظمها روح الشرق التي تتجه بطبيعتها نحو التجريد وتحوير الأشكال الطبيعية وتنسيقها في صيغ ذات إيقاع وتكوينات هندسية وزخرفية. ولقد استنبط المعماريون المسلمون نظاماً معمارياً مميزاً متكاملاً من حيث التشكيلات والتراكيب المعمارية والزخرفية التي تكون في مجموعها الطراز الإسلامي الموحد في روحه وطابعه، وإن اختلف في بعض تفاصيله من إقليم لآخر. ويرجع البعض سر الوحدة التي تجمع الفنون الإسلامية وتتجلى في الطراز الإسلامي إلى توحد الخط العربي الذي يكتب به المصحف الشريف، كذلك طابع الفكر الشرقي وتفاعله مع البيئة في البلاد التي انتشر فيها الدين الإسلامي . هكذا تهيأت نفوس أهل هذه البلاد ذات البيئة الواحدة، والمناخ المتقارب والبيئة الصحراوية، لتقبل الأشكال الفنية نفسها والفلسفات العقائدية التي تكتمل في أي بلد منها، خاصة وأنه لا توجد فوارق في الطبيعة الجغرافية بين مختلف البلاد الإسلامية إلا في تركيا والهند وحدهما، حيث تتساقط الأمطار بما لا تعرفه الأقطار الأخرى، وهو ما استدعى تغييراً في بعض التشكيلات المعمارية عن بقية البلاد الحارة والجافة الصحراوية، وإن لم يمنع ذلك دون شمولية الوحدة التعبيرية عن العقيدة الإسلامية في هذين الإقليمين، مثل باقي الدول الإسلامية، فظلتا تستخدمان نفس العناصر الزخرفية والخطوط العربية والعناصر المعمارية كالمئذنة والقبة والعقد التي تتطلبها الناحية التشكيلية بقدر ما تفرضها مراعاة الناحية الوظيفية في تدعيم الجامع ليتفق وإقامة شعائر الصلاة وطريقة انتظام المصلين صفوفاً عرضياً في مواجهة حائط القبلة. لذا وجب علينا التعرض لهذا الموروث والحفاظ عليه مع عرض بعض معطيات البيئة الطبيعية التي تمثل فيضاً من العطاء عبر موجات الزمن.
