Aim and hypotesis: The aim of this study is to be examined by the dentists the use of tobacco products by the patients who consult to the dentists, to inform the patients about the detrimental effects of usage of tobacco products and to make the necessary guidance and the application percentage of dentists' struggle against tobacco, the factors which influence the struggle against tobacco and to determine the usage of tobacco and tobacco products by the dentists..Methods: The data of this cross-sectional study is collected by using the questionnaire prepared by the researcher and Global Adult Tobacco Survey prepared by CDC. This research is carried on the dentists working at the public university, the hospitals and polyclinics affiliated with Ministry of Health in Aydın. Target population of the study is 217 individuals. Sample size is calculated as 161 by using StatCalc program by determining 50 percent expected frequency, 5 percent error margin, 95 percent confidence interval. The participants are selected by simple random sampling. The program Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 19.0 is used for evaluating the data. Kolmogorov Smirnov test was used as a goodness of fit test for normal distribution of data. The data that were normally distributed were shown with mean values and standard deviations, and the data that were not normally distributed were shown with minimum-maximum values. The factors that are influencing the practices for combat against tobacco are evaluated by Chi-squared test and Jonckheere-Terpstra test. Type 1 error value is taken as 0.05.Results: 70.8 % of participants do not use any of the tobacco products at the moment. The median of the consumed cigarettes per day by the individuals that use tobacco products every day is 17 (3-40). 91.3% of the participants got training about effects of the tobacco products on the oral health, 82.6% of the participants got training about the necessity of examining the tobacco use while taking patient's history, 67.1% of them got training about the general health effects of tobacco products. 98.8% of the participants stated that usage of tobacco products has harmful effects on the human health and 97.5 per cent of them stated that exposure to second-hand smoke has harmful effects on the human health. While the most known health effects are the effects on the mouth, heart and lungs, the effects on the bladder and stomach cancer are not much known. While 62.7% of the participants agreed that dentists should have formal training about cessation of tobacco products, 55.9% of them wish for getting the training themselves. 21.1% of the participants wish for being involved in the tobacco cessation services. Time limitation is thought to be the most influential factor in failure of services for ceasing usage of tobacco products. Although over 80.0% of the participants stated that the necessity of examining the usage of tobacco products is important and more than 70.0% of them stated that dentists should examine usage of tobacco for every patient, dentists who always examine usage of tobacco for every patient make up only 9.9% of the participants. While 69.0% of the participants stated that dentists should encourage ceasing usage of tobacco, those who practice it are only 8.1% of the participants. The median of score that the participants get from attitude and belief tests is 27.0 and that of score from the behaviour test is 20.0. There is a strong positive correlation between behavioural scores and attitude, awareness scores. Getting formal training about ceasing usage of tobacco products increases the attitudinal and behavioural scores significantly.Conclusion: Dentists do not intervene to their patients at the desired level for ceasing the use of tobacco products. Formal education significantly improves attitudes and behaviours. Dentists need to be raised their awareness about the issue and get formal education.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı diş hekimlerinin kendilerine başvuran hastalarda tütün ürünlerinin kullanımını sorgulanması, hastalara tütün kullanımının zararlarının anlatılması ve gerekli yönlendirmeyi yapması ve diş hekimlerinin tütünle mücadele uygulama sıklıklarını, tütünle mücadele uygulamalarını etkileyen faktörleri ve diş hekimlerinin tütün ve tütün ürünlerini kullanma durumunu saptamaktır.Yöntem: Kesitsel tipteki bu çalışmanın verileri araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan anket formları ve CDC tarafından çekirdek soru formu hazırlanmış olan `Küresel Yetişkin Tütün Araştırmaları (KYTA)` anketinin soruları kullanılmıştır.Araştırma, Aydın İlindeki kamuya ait olan üniversite ve Sağlık Bakanlığı'na bağlı hastanelerde ve polikliniklerde çalışan diş hekimlerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın evreni 217 kişiden oluşmaktadır. Statcalc programı kullanılarak beklenen sıklık %50, hata payı %5, %95 güven aralığı ile yedeklerle birlikte örnek büyüklüğü 161 kişi olarak hesaplanmıştır. Katılımcılar, diş hekimlerinin olduğu listeden basit rastgele yöntem ile seçilmiştir.Verilerin değerlendirmesi Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 19.0 programı kullanılmıştır. Normal dağılıma uygunluk Kolmogorov-Smirnov testi ile değerlendirilecektir. Tanımlayıcı istatistikler normal dağılıma uyan verilerde ortalama ve standart sapma; normal dağılıma uymayan verilerde ortanca ve minimum-maksimum değerleri verilmiştir. Tütünle mücadele uygulamalarını etkileyen faktörler ki-kare analizi ve Jonckheere–Terpstra testi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Tip 1 hata değeri 0,05 alınmıştır. Bulgular: Katılımcıların %70,80'i şu an tütün ürünlerinden herhangi birini kullanmamaktadır. Her gün tütün ürünü kullananların günde tüketilen sigara adetinin ortancası 17 (3-40)'dir. Katılımcıların %91,3'ü tütün ürünlerinin ağız sağlığına etkilerini, %82,6'sı tütün ürünü kullanımının hasta öyküsü sorgulanması sırasında alınması gerektiği, %67,1'i tütün ürünlerinin genel sağlık etkilerini anlatan bir eğitim almıştır. Katılımcıların %98,8'i tütün ürünü kullanımının insan sağlığına zararlı etkileri olduğunu, %97,5'i ise ikinci el sigara dumanından etkilenimin insan sağlığına zararı olduğunu belirtmiştir. En sık bilinen sağlık etkileri ağız, kalp ve akciğer üzerine etkileri iken mesane ve mide kanseri gibi etkileri daha az bilinmektedir. Katılımcıların %62,7'si tütün ürünlerini bıraktırmaya yönelik diş hekimlerinin formal eğitim alması gerektiğini düşünürken, katılımcıların %55,9'u kendisi bu eğitimi almak istemektedir. Tütün ürünlerini bıraktırmaya yönelik hizmetlerde ise katılımcıların %21,1'i görev almak istemektedir. Bıraktırma hizmetlerini yerine getirmemede en çok etkisi olduğu düşünülen engel süre kısıtlılığıdır. Katılımcıların % 80,0'inden fazlası tütün ürünleri kullanımının sorgulanması gerektiğinin önemli olduğunu, %70,0'ten fazlasının diş hekimlerinin her hastanın tütün ürünü kullanımını sorgulaması gerektğini ifade etse de tüm hastaların tütün ürünü kullanımını her zaman sorgulayan diş hekimleri katılımcıların sadece %9,9'unu oluşturmaktadır. Tütün ürünü kullanımını bırakmayı diş hekimlerinin teşvik etmesi gerektiğini katılımcıların %69,0'ı ifade etse de bunu her zaman yapanlar katılımcıların %8,1'idir. Katılımcıların tutum, inanç sorularından aldıkları puanın ortancası 27,0 (25p-75p: 42,5-53,5) ve davranış sorularından aldıkları puanın ortancası 20,0 (25p-75p: 17,0-25,0)'tir. Davranış puanları ile tutum, farkındalık puanları arasında güçlü bir pozitif korelasyon vardır(r=0,55 p<0,001). Tütün kullanımını bıraktırmaya yönelik formal eğitim almak tutum ve davranış puanlarını anlamlı düzeyde artırmaktadır.Sonuç: Diş hekimlerinin tütün ürünlerini bıraktırmaya yönelik istenilen düzeyde hastalarına müdahalelerde bulunmamaktadır. Formal eğitim almak tutum ve davranışları önemli ölçüde iyileştirmektedir. Diş hekimlerinin bu konuda bilinçlendirilmesi ve formal bir eğitim alması gerekmektedir.
