Rational for this study: In Egypt, breast cancer ranked first among cancers affecting females and accounts for 37% of women’s cancer with an incidence rate of 49.6/100,000 thus considered as a major public health problem in Egypt. Although early diagnosis of breast cancer by breast self examination not only reduces mortality, increases survival significantly but also promotes women’s overall health, yet it remains poorly used. Use of Health Believe model has resulted in effective education programs which encourage women to change beliefs and practice healthy screening behaviors. Objectives: firstly to determine level of participants’ knowledge and health beliefs regarding breast cancer (BC) and breast self examination (BSE) then assess participants’ BSE behavior and finally to evaluate the effectiveness of using health education applying health belief model ( HBM) on knowledge and BSE practice. Methodology: an intervention study was carried out using three groups pre-post design. The three groups include: The health belief model Group (HBM Group): they received educational intervention sessions based on the HBM conceptual framework, Comparison Group: received the traditional health education on BC and BSE while the control group didn’t receive any educational intervention. Data was collected from the 3 groups before and 3 months later. The target group for this study was secondary school female teachers in the Zagazig district by multiple stage random sampling technique. Results: the finding revealed that after receiving traditional and HBM tailored health education sessions to target groups: there was a significant improvement in HBM Group mean knowledge scores about BC and BSE (p<0.001) when compared to the comparison and control groups. Similarly, mean scores of the HBM subscales (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits of BSE as well as self efficacy in performing the desired behavior (p<0.001) were significantly improved in HBM Group when compared to the comparison group. No significant changes were observed in the control group. Conclusions and recommendations: the finding support the hypothesis that using health education based on HBM has better results than traditional health education as it impresses not only the knowledge but also improves the beliefs of people as it significantly changed perceived susceptibility and severity of BC, perceived barriers, benefits and self efficacy of breast screening practices in promoting BSE among the studied females. Thus we can recommend that HBM can be used as a conceptual framework for intervention programs aimed at improving BSE.
