There is no substantive agreement in the philosophical views of analytic philosophers. Nevertheless, for many of them logical analysis is widely recognized as important. While it is true that Poincaré used no logical analysis, he nevertheless refused to accept the old metaphysics. Indeed, philosophy of science in the analytic tradition is perhaps better characterized by several overlapping similarities, which are the warrant for my main thesis: Analytic philosophy of science has one of its origins in the philosophical network in France around 1900, most especially in the work of Poincaré. While I underscore the historical connection between Poincaré and logical empiricism, I do not insist either on the historical context or on the rigor of Poincaré's argumentation. It is not a question of whether, in arguing as he did, he was always consistent (he was definitely not), but to ascertain what lies behind the system he built. While the traditional interpretation of Poincaré, that he is Kantian in arithmetic and conventionalist in geometry, leads to a potentially misleading understanding of his philosophical insights, such a mis-understanding can be overcome by classifying him as belonging to the analytic tradition. This is the reason my main question is worth addressing philosophically, and does not simply express an historical perspective
