Mercury (Hg) is one of the most toxic substances commonly encountered. Mercury may contribute to preterm birth. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of maternal and infant blood Hg levels on the length of gestation. The study was conducted on 40 mother-neonate pairs in Neonatal Care Unit of Mansoura University Children's Hospital. They were divided into two groups: group 1, included 20 preterm babies and their mothers and group 2, included 20 full term infants and their mothers. Total Hg levels in maternal and neonatal blood samples were determined shortly after birth. No significant differences were found between blood Hg level in premature and full term newborn infants and between their mothers. However, highly significant positive correlations were observed between maternal and infant blood Hg levels in the two studied groups. There were also significant positive correlations between maternal and infant blood Hg levels and number of dental amalgam fillings of the mothers. In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between number of dental amalgam fillings of the mothers and gestational age of their infants. However, non-significant positive correlation between maternal consumption of fish meals per week and maternal and infant blood Hg levels was observed. Moreover, there was non-significant negative correlation between maternal blood mercury levels and gestational age, and also between maternal consumption of fish meals per week and gestational age. It can be concluded that the total Hg levels in mothers and newborn blood were positively correlated with number of dental amalgam fillings of the mothers, but not with gestationalage.

يعتبر الزئبق واحداً من المواد السامة الأكثر شيوعاًوالتي قد تسهم في إحداث ولادة مبكرة. لذلك هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى تقييم تأثير مستوى الزئبق في دم الأمهات والأطفال على مدة الحمل. وقد شملت الدراسة 40 زوجاً من الأمهات والأطفال حديثي الولادة بوحدة العناية المركزة لحديثي الولادة بمستشفى الأطفال الجامعي بالمنصورة. تم تقسيمهم إلى مجموعتين متساويتين هما: المجموعة الأولى وتشمل الأطفال المبتسرين (أقل من 37 أسبوعاً) وأمهاتهم، والمجموعة الثانية وتشمل الأطفال مكتملي النضج بتمامالحمل (37 أسبوعاً فأكثر) وأمهاتهم. وقد تم قياس مستوى الزئبق في عينات دم أمهات وأطفال المجموعتين بعد فترة قصيرة من الولادة. وقد أظهرت النتائج ما يلي: – لا توجد فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية بين مستوى الزئبق في دم كل من أطفال المجموعة الأولى و الثانية وأيضاً أمهاتهم. وبالرغم من ذلك لوحظت ارتباطات إيجابية ذات دلالة إحصائية عالية بين مستوى الزئبق في دم الأمهات والأطفال في كلا المجموعتين. – وكانت هناك أيضا علاقة إيجابية ذات دلالة إحصائية بين مستوى الزئبق في دم الأمهات والأطفال وعدد حشوات الأسنان في الأمهات. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، كان هناك ارتباط سلبي ذي دلالة إحصائية بين عدد حشوات الأسنان في الأمهات والعمر الحملي لأطفالهن. كما لوحظ أنه لايوجد ارتباط إيجابي ذي دلالة إحصائية بين عدد وجبات السمك التي تستهلكها الأم في الأسبوع ومستوى الزئبق في دم الأمهات والأطفال.
