A adth is termed gharb (unfamiliar) when only a single narrator is found reporting it at some stage of the isnd, such a adth is also termed as fard (solitary). It is not, however, necessary that any gharb (unfamiliar) adth should be weak (a‘f), because the narrator of such adth might make mistake in reporting it and uet it is correct. The authenticity of adth gharb depends on certain other factors such as: the reliability or unreliability of its narrator. whether the teacher (Shaykh) of the narrator is a renowned authority in adth such as al-Zuhr and Shu‘ba or he is a lesser known reporter. the stage of the isnd where Gharban (unfamiliarity) is found is earlear or later. the nature of the link between the narrator and his teacher (Shaykh). the nature of isnd like famous (mashhr) or non-famous (ndir) etc. Therefore a adth gharb should be studied in the light of these factors to be declared ma‘ll (defective) or a.
