AbstractBackground: Intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) (physical, psychological, or sexual abuse) is one of the most common forms of gender based violence.Objectives: to measure the prevalence, severity and type of IPV experienced by ever married women, to identify some socio-demographic and behavioral risk factors for IPV and to study some physical and mental health consequences associated with IPVAW.Methodology: A cross sectional study was carried out using a multistage stratified random sample of 700 ever-married women aged 15-49 years attending PHC in DHA of Dubai city. The study used face to face interviews through a well-structured questionnaire developed by WHO (SRQ-20).Results: Self report past year and lifetime prevalence of at least one act of physical violence was 7% and 31% respectively; the corresponding figures for sexual abuse were 3.7% and 22%, for psychological abuse (the most frequent form) were 7.5% and 41%. Physical violence incidents were mostly severe type 22%, which occurred on more than three occasions during the lifetime. Moreover 65% of women who had ever been physically abused by their partner were ever injured but mostly minor injuries. Furthermore 32% of physical IPV victims visited a health care provider in the previous 4 weeks. Risk factors for all types of violence related mainly to the husband, his low educational attainment and his intake of alcohol or drugs. All types of IPV were significantly associated with poor current health effects, Self-reported poor or very poor health 7.41 [95% CI: 2.4-23.o4]), Some/many problems, or unable to perform usual activities (5.7 [2.9-11.2]), Many problems walking/unable to walk (7.3 [2.6-20.7]), Moderate/severe/extreme pain or discomfort (3.6 [2.0-6.5]), Some/many or extreme memory or concentration problems(5.2 [3.3-8.2]), Dizziness(2.7 [1.7-4.4]), and Vaginal discharge(3.1 [2.1-4.6]). Women who reported lifetime physical or combined physical and psychological IPV reported significantly more emotional distress (8.9[5.5-11.9]), suicidal thoughts (5.15[3.3-8.2]), and suicidal attempts (8.5 [4.6-15.5]) than non abused women.Conclusion: Intimate partner violence is associated with serious public-health consequences that should be addressed in national health policies and programs.
