The present study was carried out on thirty skins of male Barki sheep (at marketing age) reared and slaughtered at two desert regions, Mariout and Siwa. All skins were preserved by salt and sent to EL-Max Tannery to be tanned using mineral tanning (chrome tanning) and vegetable tanning (quebracho and mimosa extract). Physical and chemical properties were measured on the finished leathers. All properties were measured according to Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality Control (EOC) in Cairo. The data was analyzed using GLM of SAS (2000) to study the effect of tanning method and region on physical and chemical properties of finished leathers. All data showed that leathers of sheep at Mariout were better than those at Siwa. Mariout leathers had heigher strengths, elongation, fastness to light and dry crocking than Siwa leather. But they had lower water absorption than Siwa leather. At the same way, mineral tanning by chrome was the best method followed by vegetable tanning (quebracho then mimosa), and that is due to chrome tanned leathers had better strength, elongation, and permeability to water vapor (PWV); and lowest water absorption. Quberacho tanned leathers followed chrome tanned leather in the quality, which were moderate in the physical properties and better than mimosa tanned leathers. As environmental pollution is considered a preponderant factor in adopting any industrial method, it is suggested to exclude chrome tanning method. Serious pollution problems are caused by chrome tanning, the study suggested using quebracho to tanning Barki leathers in both regions. Quebracho tanning is feasible under desert areas and gives good quality leathers than mimosa tanning.

أجريت الدراسة على ثلاثين من جلود ذكور أغنام البرقي (عمر التسويق) والتي ربيت في منطقتي مريوط وسيوة. جميع الجلود تم حفظها بالتمليح ونقلها الى منطقة المكس بالإسكندرية حيث تم دباغتها معدنيا بإستخدام الكروم ونباتيا بإستخدام مستخلصي الكبراشو والميموزا. الجلود المجهزة تم تقدير خواصها الطبيعية والكيميائية بالهيئة العامة للتوحيد القياسي بالقاهرة لدراسة تأثير منطقة الدراسة وطريقة الدباغة على جودة الجلود. وقد أوضحت النتائج تفوق جلود منطقة مريوط على جلود منطقة سيوة حيث كانت أعلى في نسبة الاستطالة والمقاومة للضوء والاحتكاك الجاف كما أعطت مقاومة أعلى لإجهادي الشد والتمزق بينما كانت أقل في إمتصاصها للماء.أما عن طريقة الدباغة فقد كانت الجلود المدبوغة بالكروم أعلى جودة من المدبوغة نباتيا، حيث أعطت أعلى قيم لنسبة الاستطالة ونفاذية بخار الماء واجهادي الشد والتمزق. أما الجلود المدبوغة بمستخلص الكبراشو فقد كانت أعلى جودة من المدبوغة بمستخلص الميموزا حيث كانت خواصها الطبيعية أفضل. وقد أوصت الدراسة بإستخدام مستخلص الكبراشو في كلا المنطقتين لدباغة جلود أغنام البرقي نظرا لسهولة إستخدامها في المناطق الصحراوية ولإنتاجها جلود جيدة الجودة، علاوة على إقلالها للتلوث البيئي الناتج عن إستخدام املاح الكروم
