قد يبدو للقارئ أن عالم (عزازيل) بأجوائه الكنسية الخاصة، بعيد كل البعد عن أجواء (ظل الأفعى) المنطلقة من واقعنا العصري في بعض مواقعها، العائدة بنا إلى ما قبل التاريخ في مواقعها الأخرى. غير أن قراءة متفحصة لكلتا الروايتين تدفعنا باتجاه ملاحظة معالم مشتركة تجمع ما قد بدا منفصلا للوهلة الأولى، وهو ما تحرص هذه الدراسة على معالجته عبر سؤالين رئيسيين يدخلان في ما هو فكري لا ينفصم عن الأدب، أو ما هو أدبي لا يخرج عن إطار الفكر؛ أولهما: ما الذي تتيحه الرواية للكاتب ولا تستطيع الأعمال الفكرية المباشرة أن تقدمه؟ والآخر: هل استطاع يوسف زيدان الأديب أن ينجو من سطوة يوسف زيدان المفكر؟ بمعنى: هل تمكن من إيصال ما هو فكري دون أن يعكر سياق السرد أو يقتحمه أو يقطع تسلسل الأحداث فيه؟ تتناول هذه الدراسة بالبحث والتدقيق الروايتين عبر محورين رئيسيين، ينشغل أحدهما بالإجابة عن السؤال الأول عبر العنوانين الآتيين: - التعبير عن الوجود الإنساني والكشف عن المجهول. - إعادة إنتاج العالم والتصدي للأنساق الموروثة. أما الآخر، فينشغل بالإجابة عن السؤال الثاني المتعلق بالبنية التركيبية للعملين، ما بين حس المفكر والأديب، وهو ما تعالجه الدراسة عبر العناوين الآتية: - الانشغال بالتحفيز الواقعي. - عنصر الرحلة. - أنماط السرد (كثيفة، شفافة).

It might occur to the reader that the canonical (churchly) world of Azazel is utterly remote from the setting created in The Snake’s Shadow - a setting which fluctuates between the contemporary and realistic at times and the pre-historical at others. However, an alert and deep reading is conducive to underscoring some common features between the two novels which at first instance might seem to be unlinked. Accordingly, the study at hand aims to deal with two questions pertaining to the tenacious link between the literary and the intellectual—or probably the ideological and the aesthetics. First: What does the narrative space offer Zeidan, the novelist, over the direct intellectual narrative? Second: Has Zeidan, the novelist, managed to refrain Zeidan, the intellectual, from emerging in the narrative voice? In other words, has he succeeded in relaying the intellectual without “blemishing” his narrative or interrupting its smooth flow? The tackling of the first question is attempted through addressing two issues: Expressing human ontology and uncovering the unknown. 1- Reconstructing the world and defying tradition. While the tackling of the second issue will be attempted through: 2- Being occupied with invoking reality. 3- The journey element. 4- Narrative types (linear/rounded), or (transparent/condensed).
